1. 日本人は対立をあまり好まないと思うんですよ。アメリ カ人はお互いに自分の意見を言って、妥協しながらやっ ていくんですけど。日本人がそういうことをしないと言 っているわけではないんですが、でも、どっちかと言う と、そういう違いがあるような気がします。
My translation of the first two sentences: "I think the Japanese don't like confrontation very much. Americans speak their minds to each other, then compromise and get on with the job."
Then I'm really struggling to make sense of the third sentence. I get something like "The reason isn't that I'm saying the Japanese don't do those things, but, choosing between the two, I feel like there is that difference." Unfortunately, this is pure gibberish, worthy even of Google Translate. Help!
2. そういう違いが結構大きいなって思いました。
I've had a few sentences like this before that have flummoxed me. Does this mean 「そういう違いが結構大きいな」と思いました。?
Also, does 結構 mean something like "fairly" or "quite" here?
3. 日本では、「新発売」とか「新製品」とか、「新」なん とかっていうのにすぐ敏感で、、、
My translation: "In Japan, (people are) readily susceptible to new products and new product lines, or generally to anything that's 'new'..."
a) Am I right that なんとかっていう = 何とか + っていう? I mean, it's nothing to do with かって = 買って is it?
b) Is it standard in Japanese to use commas (、、、) to trail off a sentence, as I've done above? I've seen this in quite a few places, but the Wikipedia article on Japanese punctuation doesn't mention it, saying instead that dots (... or ・・・) are used.
4. 私も結構新しいものにすぐ飛びつく方なんですけど、古 いものを、もう少し大事にした方がいいのかもしれませ んね。
My translation "I also tend to grab at nice new things, but I wonder if it would be good to treat old things with a little more importance."
Is this OK? Does 構新 mean something like "nice" here?
