Hi,

1. 地上で空費される時間が飛行機の速さという有利な店を帳消しにしてしまう。

What is the meaning of 店 in this sentence?

2. ストレスでやけ食いをされる方も多いと思います。

Is される honorific?

3. 誰も恥を感じるものはいない。

What does this sentence mean? Does もの refer to a person? I wondered if perhaps いない should be ない, but I'm not sure.

4. アンモニアは、非常に強い匂いをもった液体または気体である。

Why もった and not もつ?

5. 他ならぬ君の頼みなら、無下には出来ないだろう。

This apparently means "If it's a request from YOU I'm hardly likely to be able to turn you down flat."

Is "turn down" implied as part of 無下に even though the latter is grammatically just an adverb?

Yes, もの is a pronoun for a person. (Therefore いない is used.)

4)
That もった is the perfect tense. In that sentence, もつ and もっている can have the same meaning.

5)
Yeah, 無下にできない performs almost as an idiom, meaning 無下に断れない.

1. I'm very much sure it is a typo in the original text, it should read 点（てん） not 店（てん）.
2. yes.
4. 無下にする is a set phrase meaning to waste, reject, brush off, etc.
無下にできない means you cannot reject/turn down in this context.

When talking about "universal truths" (things always true, not linked to any particular position in time), are the plain verb, ～た form and ～ている form always interchangeable when modifying a noun?

No. It depends on the type of the verb. For instance, 彼が見た映画 and 彼が見ている映画 have different meanings.

Right, but wouldn't that be a case of something happening at a particular moment in time (i.e. the time when he saw the film)? I was asking specifically about things that are universally true (at any time), such as ammonia being a pungent gas, or diamonds being made of carbon, or gravity causing things to fall to the ground, or anything like that.

There are three types of verbs that can express that kind of universal trueness; 1) the present form and the - te iru form are interchangeable, 2) the past form and the -te iru form are interchangeable, and 3) the present, past and -te iru form are interchangeable.

1.
太陽の周りを回る地球
太陽の周りを回っている地球
(太陽の周りを回った地球 can be used only in a situation where the earth no longer orbits the sun.)

2.
炭素でできたダイアモンド
炭素でできているダイアモンド
(炭素でできるダイアモンド is used for a diamond that is not made yet.)

3.
無限に広がる宇宙
無限に広がった宇宙
無限に広がっている宇宙

I see, thanks.

When describing something universally or permanently true using the past form, as in 無限に広がった宇宙, do you percieve the ～た form as a true past tense, or do you view it as just a grammatical convention that has nothing to do with actual temporal considerations?

If the question makes no sense to you then please ignore it.

Not past but perfect, but yes, it seems to imply that the universe was not infinite (before the Big Bang, for instance).
