For those familiar with Japanese tourism, care to explain to me what is the difference between a yado and a ryokan?

宿 vs 旅館

宿 is a general term for a place to stay and need not necessarily be a hotel or other such establishment providing rooms for a fee. It essentially refers to having a roof over your head (shelter). Consider the term 雨宿り
