Greetings, all. (First post!) I have a question about the title of a Nintendo GameCube video game. In English, it's known as "Super Smash Bros. Melee." The original Japanese name is "大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズDX."

Jim Breen's WWWJDIC Server (my main kanji site) translates this as "Tairan Tou SMASH BROTHERS," but I've also seen it as "Dairantou ..." I believe. So I'm wondering what the best transliteration is here. Thanks!

Well I'm not too good with kanji, but it looks like the correct title should be Dairantou. It doesn't make sense as "Tairan tou" since Tairan according to my dictionary is Rebellion and tou I can't seem to find alone. But Dairantou ends up coming out as great fray which fits the game in reality. Though I just completed my first semester of Japanese today so take my word with a grain of salt.

Konnichiwa J44xm-san!
Yes, you and Stutz's "dairantou" is right! 👍

NANGI

大: Big (dai)
乱: Chaotic (ran)
闘: Fight (tou)
スマッシュ: Smash (sumasshu)
ブラザーズ: Brothers (burazaazu)

A "rantou" is a "melee" in the sense of a brawl at a baseball game or something

Thanks for the info, minna-san.
