レトルト

This is the first post to mention レトルト. I just learned it from the telly via a news article talking about セルフレジ 万引き.
Turns out it's from an English word I never heard of, "retort," that means "a vessel or chamber in which substances are distilled or decomposed by heat."
But of course the meaning in Japan is different. Related but different.

As described here, レトルト食品 are 調理済みの食品を袋やパックに入れて密封し、加熱・殺菌処理をした即席食品です。

At first glance, I thought it referred to red root. Reminds me of ホルモン.

Yes a retort and a retort stand. We used them in chemistry classes!

We were only allowed the use of beakers and test tubes in my high school chemistry class. Perhaps they were afraid we'd be distilling alcohol if we had retorts on hand.

In Hungary I learned a little about the distillation process of pálinka, which uses only fruit and water. Inspiring stuff
