より's meaning in this sentence

amuTen「夢幻」(『W.H.Y.』より)



Another quick question. I tried to search for this but the website declined; "より" is too short and common to do a topic search on, it seems.

Denshi Jisho gives a strange array of meanings, and none of them make any sense in the title of the music video above. So what does "より" mean in this case?

You really need to use a dictionary which shows example sentences. A list of English glosses by itself is not enough to understand where/how a word is used.

Another route would be to look up what 夢幻 and W.H.Y. meant in the context of this particular band (I guess W.H.Y. is an album and 夢幻 is a song on the album). Then the connection may become obvious even if the dictionary definitions are a bit vague.

It's not inconvenience, just that how you tackle unknown vocabulary/grammar is very important. Usually the dictionary is not actually the first place to stop, and it certainly shouldn't be the first and last. It would have been easiest here to figure out what "W.H.Y." was first, then make an educated guess about what sort of word より would be (based on what you know about music video titles in English), then see if the dictionary backed that guess up.

This is a very useful explanation (aimed at teaching ESL but equally applicable to any language) about context. Understanding these concepts will make your life much easier when it comes to reading.
