自分がどんなに、ウェンディーの話をいやな話だと思っていても、ちゃんと話すだけは 、話させてやらなくてはならない、と心にきめていたの です。

What is the purpose of だけ in this sentence?
 
Would an ok translation be

No matter I myself, even thinking that wendie's story is a rather detestable one, should atleast talk about it. It is essential that Italk about it. This is what I have decided on.


ウェンディーの話をいやな話だと思っていても = Even though the story is a detestable one?
 
I hope it means more like:

No matter how disagreeable he himself found Wendy's story, he had resolved that he must at least let her tell it properly.

However, I still feel a bit uncertain about ちゃんと話すだけは, and I may have it all wrong. Hopefully Toritoribe can comment.
 
Eeky-san is correct. It's causative 話させてやらなくてはならない, thus, the subject of 話す is Wendy, not "I".
 
Toritoribe, I feel a bit unsure about how the phrase ちゃんと話すだけは fits into the grammatical structure of the sentence as a whole, and what は is signifying. Can you shed any more light on this?
 
Is the chan to part, not signifying the fact that, it has to be said properly? Or rather tersely? So its like emphasis as opposed to saying it blatantly? This is just my thought though. Could be wrong.

Of the English words you mentioned, "properly" would be most appropriate. Chanto can mean differently depending on the situation the speaker is in. Basically, it means "in a way that satisfies the goal or purpose" of the speaker or the spoken to.

As I wrote in the previous thread, ～するだけは～ is a set phrase. Maybe 話すことだけはさせてやらなくてはならない is easier to understand?
e.g.
見るだけは見てやる ＝ 見ることだけはしてやる
聞くだけは聞いたほうがいい ＝ 聞くことだけはしたほうがいい
 
Unfortunately I'm not confident I understand the meaning of those.

Does the second one mean "You/we/etc. should at least ask" (e.g. even if the answer may be a refusal, nothing is lost by asking)?

I don't really have a guess for the first one. I don't understand who is the likely subject or what situation it would be applicable in.

It could be so. There is no context, so 聞く might mean "to listen/hear".

The speaker says that he is going to do just looking at it, checking it or like that, and never do other things (not going to help you, for instance).

Oh yes of course, I see that now.

I won't worry any more about trying to split だけは into grammatical components, but just treat as a set expression, as you say.
