Translation given: "Up to this point I have presented an overview of the growth of political unrest in the period."

Is ここまでで correct? Why not just ここまで?


2. 結婚の相手をさがしている。

Translation given: "They are looking for a marriage partner for you"

I translated this simply as "I'm looking for a marriage partner". Is my translation OK too?


3. 手術の結果は大変いいそうだ。

Translation given: "The results of the operation look very good".

I thought いいそうだ indicated hearsay, and the "looks good" would be よさそうだ. Am I wrong?


4. 警察庁、止まれとも言えず

Translation given: "The National Police Agency Fails to Yell 'Halt!'"

Is 言えず the negative of 言える, potential of 言う, so literally "(the police) cannot even say ('Halt!')? I don't exactly see why a potential form is called for. Why not 言わず?

2: impossible to tell with neither pronouns nor their antecedents, a case of YGIAGAM

4: Big difference between "won't say" and "can't say", don't you think? Hard to tell with no context, but it looks like a headline meant to be critical of the the police not for their choice to not enforce some unstated thing but their inability to do do. Not enough information there to say for sure, though. I would guess that there is some figurative use of speech at work there, rather than a straight literal meaning.

ここまで is also OK as an adverbial ussage. In ここまでで, ここまで acts as a noun just like ここまでの文章で.

言わず can have a nuance that the police intentionally/volitionally don't say it.
(This -to avoid adding a nuance of intention- is one of the reasons the spontaneous/passive/potential is used instead of transitive verbs.)
