Hi,


1. 「今日お父さんに会いに行く。進路相談だ」「いいです よ、そんなの」

Translation given: "I'm going to see your father today, about career counselling." "You don't need to bother with that."

I had no clue that the reply meant this. I thought it meant something like "Good!". What is the clue to its true meaning? そんなの?


2. 雨が降ればこの木は生き返るでしょう。

Translation given: "The rain will revive this tree."

The English implies that either it's raining now or rain is expected. Does 雨が降れば have the same implication?

1. いいです よ simply means "Ok" or "That's fine." そんなの is referring to the topic in the previous sentence. Simply put, in english, it'd be "I'm fine with that."

2. 降れば is the conditional form of 降る. "If it rains, this tree should come back to life."

It's an inversion, plus, there is an omission of しなくて. そんなの/そんなことしなくていいですよ makes sense? (This いいですよ has different pitch accent from いいですよ as "OK".)

2)
It implies "It is not raining now".

Yeah, it's actually ambiguous whether it means "no thanks" or "OK" if there isn't そんなの there.

I learned this at 餃子の王将. I had ordered something, and was asked, 餃子はよろしいですか. I thought answering in the affirmative would mean I would get some, so I said はい, but I ended up without 餃子. That experience taught me how context-reliant that word is. Also, on a somewhat related note, I learned the reading of 生姜 by utterly destroying it when I attempted to read it at a 弁当屋. I think what I said was なまかん. The girl at the counter looked at me like I was an idiot, so I asked her how to read it. Turns out it's しょうが (ginger).

Yeah, it's confusing indeed. In fact, はい、ください works perfectly fine as "give me some".
