I'm going back to Japan for a 2 week holiday in September - alone. I've been before with an (ex)partner so feel confident about where I'm going etc...

Are there any risks I should be aware of ?

You should be fine. Of course, without knowing your itinerary and destination it's hard to say for sure with any certainty... but I suspect you will have no problems whatsoever regardless of whether your in Metropolis or in Smallville. Just use common sense and most importantly, enjoy yourself!

There are several women living alone in Japan with no problems. I have many female friends who have lived here for years and never experienced any problems at all.

nah you should ahve no problem me and my friends used to roam free there when i lived there. Just after dark since we were still not adult yet theyd call us in cause people could try to sell us. but you should really have no problem i wouldnt worry to much about it.

Any suggestions for some good nightlife ... I'd feel a bit weird going to clubs and stuff on my own.

I know quite a few Japanese girls going it alone in Australia, if they can survive here you'll be fine in Japan

Going to a bar/club/etc. alone in Japan?
for more info me too lazy + crabby to type, because i know in my heart that if i said there be a three-headed dragon at the exit of the airport to bite op head off, she would still go
also, check for threads by the original poster of that topic. she was forever asking questions about japan
