Japanese Yakuza films from the 60-70's!

I just finished of two of Kinji Fukasaku's classics STREET MOBSTER and YAKUZA GRAVEYARD. Both of which are instant classics in my books. I'm about to watch another of his films BATTLES WITHOUT HONOR & HUMANITY. I'm fairly new to this genre and would like to dive more into it. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations. I just bought the new 6 disc boxset for YAKUZA PAPERS film series, which I also look forward to diving into! :-)
 
Another Fukusaku film I like is Graveyard of Honour. Takashi Miike remade it, but his version stinks.
 
How is the Yakuza Papers box? I'm not sure if I'll be able to find it around here. I understand the films are all very old, has there been any restoration done?

You can buy the box-set from HERE fairly cheap. They are based in the US as well. As far as the film's themselves, I'm hearing nothing but great stuff in terms of their presention. I can't wait till they show up!
 
The films in this box set are really nicely done, sharp clear picture and great sound. My only concern (and it is minor) is they are presented in a fold out gatefold box not in individual boxes therefore you loose the information that would be on the back of each individual DVD carton.

i didn't know that. but i read that the box set comes with six discs, instead of five... plus i compared each of them and they all pretty much say the same thing, except for one paragraph synopsis?
also posting that borders got the get three, get fourth free deal again...
i bought these (1 was not available, 2,3,4,5), but returned and got zatoichi (also from hve) after i found out about the extra disc
 
Yes, you have to grab the Box-set to get the bonus sixth disc. It's well worth the money if you like this genre.

Yeah, but it is sometimes interesting to learn about the Yakuza film portion of Japanese cinema.

For me it is, maybe not everyone? :)

i dunno, but that's why i returned the four i had
now i'm trying to find some other good box sets to go with it to buff it out to four and get one free
really difficult because borders is so expensive on most dvds...

bunta's main boya was wild too (first episode)
now i know where takumi daddy came from
 
they was all good
now i'm scared to watch them again
the supplemental disc was good too, i knew the subtitler wasn't no cutie, but it was good to put a face to the comments
david kaplan needed to go more indepth imo though
 
Sympathy For The Underdog

Here's the latest DVD release from HVE here in North America from the Kinji Fukasaku collection. It was made just before his THE YAKUZA PAPERS series. SYMPATHY FOR THE UNDERDOG is set in Okinawa just before the US handed over control to Japan. Here are my complete thoughts on this great outing from Fukasaku!

The box set is a great addition to any collection. however the subtitles are a little shady.
