Tech Partially completed Maglev Shinkansen station unveiled

Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) opened the construction site of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen maglev station in Sagamihara to the press yesterday. Provisionally called "Kanagawa Prefecture Station," it is set to be the only underground station among the four intermediate stops on the route between Shinagawa and Nagoya. The planned station will measure approximately 680 metres in length and up to 50 metres in width. Excavation has reached a depth of roughly 30 metres, the level at which the station's foundation will be laid. The area that will eventually house the primary and secondary tracks, as well as the platforms—entirely underground when completed—is currently visible from the surface.

Construction of the Metropolitan Area Tunnel No. 2, an underground tunnel, will also commence from the western end of the station, JR Tokai said. The Linear Chuo Shinkansen maglev line, which will connect Shinagawa and Nagoya, was initially set to open in 2027. However, due to delays in starting construction on the Shizuoka section and other reasons, the earliest anticipated opening is now 2034.
