News Harry Potter Park in Tokyo recalls replica swords

The operator of the Tokyo Harry Potter theme park has issued a recall for replica Godric Gryffindor swords due to potential violations of Japan's strict weapons laws. Warner Bros. Studios Japan LLC, the park's operator, confirmed that 351 swords were sold between May 2022 and April 2023. The 86-centimetre-long replicas, displayed on wooden plaques, were priced at 30,000 yen each.

The Godric Gryffindor Sword​


The park, called Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo--The Making of Harry Potter, opened in June last year. Police informed the company that the replicas can be classified as "swords" under the Firearms and Swords Control Law and must be registered with authorities. Warner Bros. Studios is now asking customers who bought the swords to contact the company.

What are these replicas made of? If it's a metal of sorts I kind of understand since the weapon is quite, ah, pointy and potentially lethal in the hands of overzealous re-enactment. Or kids. I've stabbed my friends a billion times with wooden sticks, I don't think they would have survived if I'd had something like this back then xD
But if it's not, I don't see the issue.

Uhh, that's illegal in Denmark, too, without a collector's permit. Anything over 12cm which isn't part of a recognised trade (fishing, carpentry, etc) is illegal without a license.
 
I was given a Japanese sword as a going away present in 1973. I was warned it would shatter like glass if you hit anything hard with it. Still have it stored away in my cellar.

I would have mine out on display if I ever got something like that. I did think about importing one from Japan but getting the damned thing from Japan to Denmark through customs was nigh impossible, not to mention all the physical paperwork required to get a permit.
.. and now I don't have room anymore; I've acquired too much clutter throughout my life 😁
 
With no kids , my wife and I laugh at whoever ends up cleaning our house out when we pass away.

I never throw anything away and my wife has hundreds of books and craft items. We figure it will take a month to clean it all out.

Yeah, there's a limit to how much you want to pay to bring all the unnecessary bits with you, isn't there? Alas, my bf is rather attached to this little country of ours..
 
To pseudo-quote Harry: "First they'll come for your swords, then they'll come for your wands..."

It's kind of amazing that these swords were even on the market for a considerable while before someone had the forethought afterthought...

edit: I wonder if there'll be a black market trade in swords that have escaped the recall. Seems like they'll be pretty rare/collectible.
