Rarest Pokemon card ever sold for USD 360k

On Tuesday, a rare and valuable Pokemon card sold for $360,000 at a Sotheby's auction in New York. The card in question is a Japanese 1998 "Pokemon Illustrator" holographic card featuring Pikachu, the beloved mascot of the Pokemon franchise. Only 39 official copies of this card exist, making it highly sought after by collectors. To add to its value, the card being auctioned was the only known example signed by Takumi Akabane, one of the three founders of the Pokemon Trading Card Game. The identities of both the seller and the buyer remain confidential.

The cards were given out as an award to winners of a 1998 drawing contest by the Japanese magazine CoroCoro Comic. One of them, considered the best-preserved card, was purchased for $5,275,000 in 2021, winning Guinness World Records recognition as the most expensive Pokemon card the following year.

DAMN. I didn't really think that people would spend that much money on a dam Pokémon card, i find Pokémon generally to be stupid.

Actually my son taught me the meaning and usage of this term just a few weeks ago. I don't remember how it came up.
I don't necessarily feel comfortable that I know enough to use the phrase appropriately myself BUT I feel that I can trust Deadvincent's judgment on this matter.

Sigma generally refers to a cool person, so it wasn't a very good time to use it here. But most kids or adolescents would be able to determine its meaning.

Didn't even say that buddy. :) Also, you will appreciate that you can't get under my skin and mock me like you're trying to do now. I face harsh words from family members on an hourly basis, so I have somewhat of an immunity to it.

A good rule of thumb is to not say or like things you don't know the meaning of. Being an adult, i was 99% sure you did NOT know what sigma means. Also, stop saying sigma. It makes you look like a wannabe de-generate who wants to be a kid again.

At this point I'm only saying it to annoy you. You're so sigma for picking fights with adults and giving them advice on how to use the Internet when they've been using old school Internet forums like this since before you were born.

BTW Pikachu is very sad that you would say Pokemon are stupid.

Back on topic, I'm always surprised to see that Pokemon is still as popular as it is today, given how old it is now. Given that I can recall when the cartoons with Team Rocket were new, it's amazing to me that it still has relevancy to kids today. Two of my nephews used to collect Pokemon cards until recently. During the pandemic, I remember searching high and low for Pokemon cards as a gift and continuously coming up empty-handed.

Spending upwards of $300,000 on a single card...of any kind...completely blows my mind.
