" Four? " is the translation of the inscription on the swordI have a samurai sword that my late father bought back from Japan in 1944 so it has been in my family for the past 60 years.
My sister and I would like to restore it and we recently removed the handle which revealed a hand painted inscription.
Could someone please translate these characters so that we can learn its history/background? The character names would also be nice.
I have attached images taken recently.

Sword I am trying to translate
Hello, I am new to the platform, and I was advised to create a new thread regarding the sword I am trying to translate. I am having a lot of trouble with this one, I do believe I may have the swordsmith's clan, however I am not sure on that. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
