Tosa Mitsuoki (土佐光起, 1617–1691), “Kajiwara Kagesue and Sasaki Takatsuna Racing at Uji River” (梶原景季・佐々木高綱宇治川先陣図), folding screen painting, Edo period, 17th century. The scene depicts the celebrated contest between Kajiwara Kagesue and Sasaki Takatsuna during the Battle of Uji in 1184, one of the most famous episodes of samurai warfare. The Uji River crossings later became the site of decisive fighting again during the Jōkyū Disturbance of 1221.
