Hikone Castle

Sawaguchi Tamon-yagura (沢口多聞櫓) — Important Cultural Property — Edo period

The Sawaguchi Tamon-yagura guarded the Sawaguchi entrance (沢口), one of the principal gateways through Hikone Castle's middle moat (nakabori, 中堀). The long turret spans the gate passage between two corner towers and stands atop massive stone walls overlooking the moat. Together with the nearby Nobori-ishigaki (登り石垣), it formed an important part of the castle's defensive system.
