Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (月岡芳年, 1839–1892), *Hatakeyama Shōji Shigetada* (畠山庄司重忠), from the series *Yoshitoshi Musha Burui* (芳年武者无類, “Yoshitoshi’s Courageous Warriors”) — December 1883 (Meiji 16), colour woodblock print (nishiki-e). Part of Yoshitoshi’s celebrated late-Meiji series portraying renowned warriors from Japanese history, the print reinterprets historical figures through dramatic composition and psychological intensity. It depicts the final moments of Hatakeyama Shigetada (1164–1205), a Kamakura-period gokenin (御家人) killed at the Battle of Futamatagawa, drawing on medieval chronicles and warrior tales. Yoshitoshi stresses tension and movement rather than strict realism, reflecting the late-nineteenth-century revival of heroic warrior imagery as artists revisited Japan’s martial past amid rapid modernisation. At the same time, the series as a whole commemorates ideals of courage and loyalty associated with the early samurai tradition.
