Hase-dera (長谷寺), formally known as Kaikōzan Jishōin Hase-dera (海光山慈照院長谷寺), is one of the pre-eminent Buddhist temples in Kamakura. The temple is famous for its massive wooden statue of Kannon, known as Hase Kannon (長谷観音), which is also regarded as the temple's principal object of worship. In the traditional enumeration, it is listed as the fourth of the thirty-three temples on the Bandō Sanjūsankasho pilgrimage route, which is dedicated to Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Originally affiliated with the Tendai sect (天台宗), it now belongs to the Jōdo sect (浄土宗).
