I'm [planning] on traveling to fukuoka this December to goto school there (if i can get everything done i wanted before then), I got an estimate today about how much it'll cost and whatnot to goto the school there, Anyhow, They said that due to my nationality of that of being american, I'm only valid to stay to up to 6 month unless i had a special visa that will allow me more then 6-month of stay, and i would like to stay for up to a year there. Does anyone have any insight on this?

If you are going to school you should be applying for a student visa. When I got one it was good for one year I believe.

Contact Immigration office in japan, and ask for a re-entry papers.

Is there a waiting period? I heard that if I did not get re entry prior to leaving I had to wait 1 year

I personally do not live in japan, But i would imagine you give them a call and they'll give you a figure of how long you gotta wait. If any at all.

thanks for the help

For future reference, in emergency cases like yours the re-entry permit can be issued at the airport prior to your departure. It is a shame you didn't know that before you left.
