Yeah in the letter it was stated end of June but on the day we sat for the exam, Ms Yin asked us not to call the embassy and bug them as the result will be out in 3 weeks time. Error 7(iii)? I think it has something to do with your study plan but again Ms Yin mentioned that she'll explain that error to you once you pass the exam stage

I'm also applying for the first time in Hong Kong for the MEXT scholarship for research student next year. I don't know if the embassy here in HK will see the handed in application materials and choose only some for the written test, but I've got an email last Monday and a call from the embassy last Wednesday as well asking me if I have got the notice on the Monday email for the written test. The written test in HK will be in the 1st of June. Actually, since I have passed JLPT 1 with 325 and TOFEL of 109, I asked them if I can be exempted from the exams but they said that it is a absolute requirement.
Anyway, I've done five past year paper of Japanese and 4 past year paper of English. Actually, my English is much better than Japanese since we are using English all the way from undergraduate here, but the English test paper totally ****** me up, especially the finding mistake parts. To me, it's definitely harder than TOFEL. Anyway, I could basically managed to get around 88 in the Japanese paper but in one of the English paper, I just got 70. I was wondering if any of you know that how many marks should we obtain in order to proceed next to the interview level? Is it above 80 in either of the paper? If it's above 90, then I got a big problem...
Finally, I hope all the friends here can get this wonderful scholarship, and I hope we can manage to meet in Japan next year maybe in some universities in Kyoto or Tokyo and hold a party together!

Hi there! last year they changed the "spot the mistake" part, so don't worry! maybe someone that has already taken this year's exam can tell us if they have brought it back again (I hope not!)
I'm not sure about the marks, In my country they just tell you if you have passed or not It is mandatory to pass the japanese or english exam, you cant have low marks in both.

As ykk said, yeah the finding mistakes part has been removed since last year. Don't worry too much bout the paper which you got 70. I guess it was the first paper you attempted out of the 4? Perhaps you're just not familiar with the format initially. After some practices, you'll do perfectly well as you already know their shenanigans ;-)
As far as I know, better mark of japanese and english written exams will be taken into account in recruitment procedure. That is to say, that you can speak japanese poorly if you have a good ability in english, and vice versa. At least, such rules are for polish applicants for Research Student Monbukagakusho Scholarship (postgraduate).
Also, to my knowledge, english exams are optional, so you shouldn't worry, if you have written jp exam very well.
PS. "Spot the mistake part" is a killer. I hate it

It makes me much relieved to see an hour ago that last year's English and Japanese paper have both changed and that blurcheryl has confirmed that this year, there wouldn't be any mistaking picking part ever again.
Btw, I just downloaded the exam papers for 2010 research students. I've spent an hour on the Japanese paper consisting of 20 questions and surprising that I've got all of the answers right. The time is like in Japanese 窶堋ｬ窶堙ｨ窶堋ｬ窶堙ｨ. Hopefully, I could get the same mark in the actual exam in the 1st of the coming June.

I just saw the English paper for 2010. I think I need to re-phrase my sentence. The sentence correction part is still there this year but instead of identifying the wrong sentence, you indentify the wrong phrase or word. Very similar to TOEFL. I thought when the previous batch mentioned that that part was eliminated, they simply meant that we don't need to identify wrong sentences anymore which is true for this year. I consider identifying wrong sentence different from identifying wrong phrase. The former is more difficult to me. I'm really sorry for the confusion. My bad.
Oh no..I'm not too sure if I've passed the written test. I have a bad feeling on this And my command of Japanese language is horrible so I don't think my Japanese marks can help me at all.
Has anyone been called in for tests/interviews in North America yet? For Canada it's been almost two weeks since the deadline to submit the written documents and I haven't heard anything yet.....

Dear blurcheryl, actually, I was just asking for the format of the Japanese paper. If the paper is like last year consist of only short paragraphs with one question for each paragraph.

I'm still gathering papers for the application, and I ran into a new problem... It's about the recommendation letter from work/school. The embassy requires 1 original and 2 copies, but on the recommendation form says that the recommender needs to place the letter into a sealed envelope and send it back to me. Am I supposed to open the sealed envelope and photocopy the recommendation or he should prepare from the start 1 original and 2 copies and put them into the envelope? I'm a little confused about this... And where do I get the "one of the envelopes marked 'confidential'"??

Hey, ralukchiris. I just got an envelope, wrote on confidential on it, and gave it to the professors. The professors will need to write the designated form, put it into the envelope, sign their names on the seal, and give it back to me.
I called the Japanese Embassy here in Hong Kong, and they told me I can just hand in the sealed letter, and they will open it to make the additional 2 copies for me.
That's the information according to my embassy here, hope it will be useful to you.

@blurcheryl, was there no sentence correction part? what addition was done instead? was there any question in which some error was to be detected? I would be thankful to you for your reply.
I was told to have them put the copies and the original together in the sealed envelope. This was after I had already gotten my recommendation sent to me. Total pain.
I called the embassy today, and they told me to ask the professor/ boss to make the 2 copies and put them in the envelope together with the original. ^^
I just tried last year's English test (no sentence correction part!!) and it seemed to be much easier than another one (I don't know which) I tried before. Got 93 out of 100 points. Can anybody who passed this the 2011 test already give us an impression of this year's examination?
