How important is the Japanese test?
just wondering.
Is it used to see how much Japanese you know or is it used as a deciding factor on your acceptance?
I know you get about 6 months of Japanese training with the scholarship.
So can someone at a JPLT 3 level go in, fail the test and still get accepted?

If you are studying a subject that requires a high level of Japanese language skill, very important (things like Japanese language studies, history, politics, etc.)

I dunno, I think both.

You can, but I think it's up to your professor/school. I'll be studying in English, so I am expected to start in the lab straight away, however I'll be doing part-time classes through the uni.

Absolutely! I am about kindergarten level, and I got in
But my course is in English, my supervisor speaks English and I am studying communications. So that might not be true for everyone, depending on study area etc.

Hi! I am a graduate student in one of partner institutions of Keio University and nominated as an exchange student. I can apply either as a research student or Japanese language student. Is it more risky to apply for research program since they say advisor and graduate school should both accept you. Whearas for language program there does not seem to be such additional criteria.
In addition, I can apply for eiter monbusho or jasso. Which one is more likely to get? (Jasso has 1800, monbusho has app 4000 spots but I did not meet personaly anyone who get monbusho) What do I need for getting a unviersity recomendation? I have not yet get into contact with any professor? Along with my starter Japanese (maybe jlpt 3) does this fact make both monbusho and my acceptance as research student less likely?

I really liek to go to Japan, but not contacted with any professor. So if it is more likey I will go for Jasso, cause I may not be able to go If I apply for monbusho and be rejected.
What do you advise me to do?

The Application Guidelines for Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships 2011 went officially out today, you can find them in the studyjapan website (i can't post the link cuz i have not posted enough on the forum to have those rights)...and in my home country Costa Rica the official deadline is June 4th...so I guess we are officially on the process...ganbatte!

Totally new here, stumbled upon this thread and other MEXT threads that had some good information for me. In the process of trying to apply for 2011 too, as a "Research Student" in Civil Engineering (structures/transportation engineering) though. Not sure if any other people here have applied for that major and have any tips or advice for me, but would be much appreciated since this is my first time applying.

Already started to gather the application materials, but it seems like it's best to contact the professor before applying for MEXT? Is it really necessary at this stage or does it just kind of give your application a plus in the process?

Arap thanks for your response in the other thread! I just wanna get in this thread and hope everyone the best for their application process this year.

Edit: I dont want to get ahead of myself, even before the application period opens, but during the interview stage what does the panel consist of? Also what language will the interview be conducted? I assume if we can do japanese it will be in japanese? If not will it just be in english or our native language as well?

From my experience, mostly it will be done in English, they never use my native language during the interview.

This is a scholarship for research students/postgraduate studies. Usually when you get this scholarship you become a research student. After 6 months/1 year/2 years you can choose (pass entrance exams) to either study a master's course or in case you already did a master's course, a doctorate course. You can start the master's or doctorate course right away if this suits you better. Usually both a master's course and a doctorate will require you to write a thesis/dissertation. Depending on your field of study and the professor who is supervising you, you may learn more or research more yourself, but a certain amount of research will usually be necessary. If you would give more information about what field you are planning to go into, it will be easier to give a clear answer.

Thanks Scalemx for the info..I have submit the application form with my study plan for this course....when i came to my office this morning and start checking my email, I'm so excited!! ..Thanks God, I've passed for 1st stage and be selected to proceed to the second stage (written exam)...and, what I'm wondering now is the type of examination and the questions..it is all about grammar? multiple choose? essay? it is really appreciated if anyone can help me find it out ☝

Basically, no rules dictates on how many pages that you need to write, just make sure that you write your research objective and methodology as clear as possible. In my case, last year, I wrote 3 pages long while some of my friends only did 2 or 1 page.

For the past year question...hmm...I don't really know perhaps you still need to wait until written exam date is announced, in my case, when embassy told me about my exam date, 2009 question was already posted on studyjapan.org sites.

First ever attempt,
only found out about MEXT last year~ and it was too late to apply for this year's; but will just give it a go for 2011.
Seems very hard, but I guess it's time to move out from my comfort zone,
besides been wanting to find an opportunity to study in Japan for a long time.
So def. will give it a go!

I am intending to apply for sth. related to life-science, because that's my field.
And def. am interested in University of Tokyo and Kyoto , but of course I understand they're super hard to get into. Because Uni. of Tokyo's Life Science is not only world-renown, so I'm assuming that they should be better at English. It's not entirely that ideal to learn all those fanciful terms in Life Science all over again, when I could barely rmb them in English (slash Latin ).

I know quite a lot of ppl in this forum are from humanities/art/engineer, but anyone applying/applied previous actually from Life Sciences?! (or medical related field?)

For those who've applied to a Science-related subject (i.e doesn't exactly need to be in Life Science), what kind of advice or opinions would you share when approaching a prof./how to choose? Thank You so much! 窶堋?窶堙ｨ窶堋ｪ窶堙??堋､ﾂ！ﾂ！ﾂ！
