a 3-month stay vs. a "very tight budget" do not seem compatible. How much do you hope to spend? Will you use the JR Rail Pass any of that time?

Most of your sites seem to be just in Tokyo. What exactly interests you?

Have you looked at the JNTO site? Or Lonelyplanet.com/thorntree?

About 6 grand maybe 7.
i got it figured out for about

flight-2400 for both of us (taking the China airlines)
Were staying at a hostel which is 460 a month for rent (1300) roughly
Japan Rail Pass 1100 for both

:)
and we just want to see the country and learn the culture more in depth :-)

What do you plan to do for food?

i read that stores doscount sushi and such at the end of the day :)
Noodles,i dont plan on eating out.
were here for an adventure :)
Don't kid yourself. After a week of that, you'll want something else.

You're being unrealistic.

Your Rail Pass is only good for a month at most.

460 x 3 months = 1380 (is this total cost or per person?)
rail pass = 1100
food (figure on 2000 per day, so x 90 = 180000 = $1800
Other traveling will cost you.

You should very carefully check to make sure that all the places you plan to visit are on lines covered by the JR pass. It doesn't cover every railroad and subway in Japan.

They can be renewed in-country, however, at major stations after showing a valid return ticket.
That's the extent of my help from someone angst-ridden at living off 30,000 yen (~15,000 board) for a week. :p

Renew as in extend the validity period, Elizabeth? Where does it say that?
JAPAN RAIL PASS | ジャパン・レール・パス

I have not heard of such a thing. The above link says you cannot purchase the passes in Japan.
Oh, it looks like buying inside Japan may just be for the regional pass (5-10 days) JR EAST. Sorry. :-).
JR-EAST - East Japan Railway Company

And a visitor most likely cannot purchase more than 1 regular JR Rail Pass outside the country to use consecutively in Japan...
