Because I'm vegetarian I take a multivitamin and mineral pill every day, mainly to make sure I'm getting my B vitamins.

I also take glucosamine, the vegan kind from fermented corn, not the usual kind from shellfish. Although clinical studies show conflicting results, I think it helps. I play video games A LOT, and I found the joints in my arms and hands were aching unbearably whenever I played. I gave glucosamine a try and the results were pretty much immediate; I rarely get any aches and pains at all after taking it for a few months.

Do you take any dietary supplements?

I also take a ferrous sulfate pill in place of red meat for low-normal levels of hemoglobin, borderline iron-definicency anemia (it's the green tea...:(). Not that I don't enjoy a ton of green leafy vegetables and fortified cereal everday for lunch -- salad, nuts, broccoli, etc + multivitamin, but a supplement does actually boosts levels more effectively since plant-derived ("non-heme") iron isn't as easily absorbed by the body.

And do it all on an empty stomach, that's the kicker, one hour before and two hours after meals. If the potentially distressing side effects are tolorable and nothing comes right back up...

So how do vegetarians make it through the day without fainting ?? :p
They can't have my circulation or you would have "white finger" issues at the first whiff of autumn. :.)

How does anyone make it through the day without fainting? By eating a diet that contains all the nutrients we need, which is no more difficult for a vegetarian than a meat-eater, providing you care about what you eat.

How does a meat-eater make it through the day without having a heart attack? :p

As a vegetarian and an anemic, my old days are not going to be good.

Then again, I barely eat as it is. I am going to start taking multivitamins as I don't want my bones to go to crap.

I take Vitamin D3 in the winter to prevent low immunal response and compensate for the lack of sunlight. I will be receiving my supply of stuff in the mail soon :D If you're vegan you may wish to look into Vitamin D slightly if you haven't already. It's very hard to get if you're not eating any dark oily fish (sardines, kipper etc), and especially in a place like the UK where sunlight exposure is low. You may find it boosts your immune system and helps more with the bones and joints. Vitamin D is actually a hormone and has quite a large impact on the body by stimulating the body to help itself. The FDA recommends something ridiculously low like 800IU a day but adults are supposedly getting (in nature, at the equator) the equivalent of 4000 - 5000IU. By the way, cancer and illness are lower around the equator in sunny areas. Granted, not many industrialized cities and nations exist there so maybe stress and pollution is lower too.

I eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables and real oatmeal (not instant, raw oats and boiled water and brown sugar) and high quality eggs and the occasional chicken, mostly fish. Rarely if ever do I eat red meat. I also drink a fair amount of Japanese tea blends and soy milk. Overall I don't feel the need to supplement beyond what I'm getting, aside from the D, BUT, lately, I have been consdering Iron supplementation to compensate for my low red-meat diet. I exercise quite vigourously 3 times a week and I occasionally get cravings for red meat so I think my body is telling me I'm borderline with the iron.

Hmmm....that's definitely a new consideration. Without ever having been noticeably symptomatic, unless the decificieny is extremely subtle (brittle, peeling fingernails ??), it still might be prudent to have my Vitamin D blood levels checked. I thought I was being informed with 1200IU a day through the combined effects of 2 Calcium tablets and multivitamin in addition to a whole grain bran cereal, 3-4 cups of soy and 1 regular milk as cocoa base. And fish oil supplements ??

My exercise routine involves a stationary bike workout 3 hours a week. So naturally I'm also open to anything that brings more energy and productivity to a workout which doesn't involve actually going outside. :)

I eat meat, over a kg of fruit and over 1/2 kg of vegetables + multivitamin a day. Can't go wrong with that. Although I should probably drink milk, even though I mortally loathe the thing.

Wow, that's a pretty impressive diet for a student ;-)

Fruit is the one thing I don't eat enough of. It's too messy, and I always mean to get my dose from fruit juices but somehow never get around to drinking enough.

It doesn't keep well either. Can yogurt be credited as fruit servings ?? :p If not, I'm with you down to the two bananas with pineapple and mandarin orange salad garnishes.

Haha, thank you. :D The reason behind is that I have anxiety disorder, primarily health anxiety, so I'm pretty rigorous about such things.
What's the meat ? 😌

I'm so sick of seeing fat people everywhere. I work my tail off exercising & eating right and agree with the strongest possible condemnation of those who show a reckless disregard for their own safety and the safety of society through any high risk behavior. :angryfire:

I work at a pharmacy, and 1000U = 250% of Vitamin D. So the FDA isn't lying.

Unfortunately no one follows this, they go with 2000U is the minimum. I've never filled scripts for lower than 1000U.

So taking MultiVitamins with some vitamins and minerals over 100% RDA isn't necessarily safe ? Because my intake with that and Calcium pills alone is 350%.

Although I'm pretty certain the body doesn't have a toxic reaction to vitamin D from sun exposure or foods like fish as a form of consumption. 😌

I have anxiety disorder too, hence the importance of making sure I get my B vitamins 👍

chemo.net - This website is for sale! - chemo Resources and Information.

This page has the amounts needed and possible effects of overdose for a few vitamins. It seems that Vitamin A and iron are the most likely to be taken to excess. You'd need to take 50,000IUs of vitamin D to overdose.

Thank you Tsuyoiko for posting this as it is information that everyone needs and should follow.

I take many supplements on a daily basis as follows:

A muti-vitamin that provides more than 100% of what I need in the form of essential vitamins and minerals.

1,000 mg of Norwegian Cod Liver Oil for essential Omega 3 fatty acids

3,000 mg of additional vitamin C and 5,000 mg when I feel I am coming down with a cold.

Two teaspoons of Super Silver solution to kill bacteria and viruses in the body without hurting the good bacteria in the intestines as silver is known to kill bad bacteria and viruses. Is it any wonder our ancestors used "silverware" when eating? It was because the bits of silver that slipped off the fork or spoon and entered the body kept one healthy. Check out the link and video. Case in point: A few years ago while in Japan I came down with an attack of diverticular (a bacterial infection of the large intestines) which I posted on JREF and which I have suffered with for 10 years. I went to a doctor, received antibiotics and all was well within 2-3 days. I suffered another attack last year and took the silver solution and the problem was cleared up in the same amount of time with no antibiotics! I never even went to a doctor. Now I take it on a daily basis whether I am sick or not.

2,250 mg of Fermented Tumeric from Japan for the heart. Here is the link specifically for Tumeric from this MD

4,000 mg of Chlorella (natures best known natural food source) from Japan

One half teaspoon of of Cayenne Pepper to clean out my arteries. Cayenne is also known as the Roto-Rooter of the arteries. As the doctor states in the link, "In 35 years of practice, I have not lost one heart attack patient." Read on in the link for the additional astonishing benefits of Cayenne Pepper.

1,000 mg of Chitosan (a fiber made from sea shells), natures best known fat absorber, if I am eating high fat foods like Pizza or something to soak up the fat without letting it get into your system. Here is another link from Vanderbilt University concerning the health benefits of Chitosan.

I am soon to be 55 years old. I smoke about 10 cigarettes per day, eat meat about twice a month, enjoy my pizza and other high fat foods on occasion and weigh 163 lbs at 5'9".

Two years ago I went for what is called a "heart view" at the request of a doctor (which I rarely visit). When the results came back it said I had the heart of a 35 year old and had ZERO plaque in my arteries.

My doctor was astonished and couldn't understand that my heart was so healthy and with no plaque while I smoked and ate meat and high fat foods on occasion. She asked if I was a vegetarian and I said I was not, but I do try to eat healthy. I mentioned Cayenne pepper, Tumeric, and Chitosan to her and she kind of showed an interest. Today I am glad to say that she sort of changed her ways and now is a specialist promoting the benefits of natural "medicines" like Chitosan, Cayenne Pepper, Tumeric, etc among others without the use of pharmaceuticals which all have unhealthy side effects.

Was I the catalyst? Probably not, but she now has her own practice promoting natural foods and vitamins and supplements in lieu of pharmaceutical drugs. If I become ill I will consult her before ever going to a hospital or traditional doctor.

If a supplement or food says that it gives you 100% of your daily vitamins don't believe that it will keep you healthy. Don't believe it for one millisecond. The "100% factor" that is so often advertised is the MINIMUM your body needs to stay healthy. A normal body needs well in excess of 100% and more nearer to 1,000% of many vitamins and minerals to ward off diseases and illnesses to stay healthy.

With processed foods today all natural minerals and vitamins have been eliminated. Therefore, one NEEDS supplements to stay healthy. However, one should know what minerals and vitamins, if taken in excess, can do more harm than good. They are few and rare, but in the long run though, the benefits of more than 100% of most minerals and supplements far outweigh not taking them at all.

If this is true then why do doctors and hospitals not promote this? Because there is no profit in it that's why. 50% of a doctors training is in prescribing drugs. You cannot patent a natural substance, thus no mega-profits for the pharmaceuticals. One can easily control their cholesterol, blood pressure, plaque build-up, ward off diseases, defeat cancer, etc through natural supplements as the links above will show. The pharmaceutical industry is now exploring ways to prevent the general public from taking natural supplements. Check out this link on how it is being done. If this passes we are all screwed and at the mercy of the pharmaceutical industry. Just Google "Codex 2009" for more info.

I first got into natural supplements and food about 10 years ago after hearing an interview with one Dr. Lorraine Day, an emergency room physician, who defeated her own breast cancer with natural supplements and food when she was given 6 months live. As she is so fond of saying, "A cancer patient represents a minimum of $250,000 to a hospital, so they have no reason for you to get well. If the cancer doesn't kill you, the chemotherapy will." Sadly, she has gone "commercial" with her success, but her original message remains with me. You can find additional info on her on the web. However, DO NOT believe her critics as their only interest is in making profits with drugs and hospitalization.

Another female MD, Dr. Ghislane Lanctot, who lost her license to practice medicine in Canada for writing an expose book titled "The Medical Mafia", exposes the medical industry for the fraud that they are. You can download her entire book at the link above and draw your own conclusions. Wait a few seconds or minutes for the book to download and then save it. You must have Adobe Acrobat reader to save and read it. It is free on the web. Just Google it. It is a wealth of information and may just save your life or thousands in medical care and prescription drugs.

Based on my own research and the research of the two women MD's listed above along with the "Heart Doctor" promoting Tumeric, I will NEVER take a drug for any ailment and never have and at my age and the results of my "heart view" and present health, I believe I am on the right track, but don't take my word for it. Do your own research and make your own conclusions. In the end you will discover that supplements and natural foods are the only way to go for maximum health and longevity.

I know I am a considered a "conspiracy nut" but all what I have posted here and in other posts I have verified with facts and links to same with many hours of research. I believe one must first save themselves first.

Tumeric from Japan for the heart.

There's also some evidence that turmeric has anti-cancer effects

Turmeric back in the fight against cancer

Cayenne Pepper to clean out my arteries.

I've also seen cayenne pepper capsules being sold as a treatment for stomach ulcers, although I couldn't find any scientific studies to back this up.

And a long list of other supplements and foods of grave importance, right? :D haha

Yup, along various crazy rituals that get me through the day :D

Yes Tumeric is known as a cancer fighter also.

That's a new one on me. I'll have to check it out. Recent strudies have proved that ulcers are caused by bacteria and not stress as was previously thought so it would make sense. I believe two scientists from Australia received the nobel prize for this about 3 or 4 years ago.

Also, capsuls are bad from what I've read. When the pepper touches your tounge and it's hot it sends signals to the stomach to release enzymes that coat the stomach to prevent it from being burned by the pepper. With capsules, the stomach dosen't know it's coming down until it's too late.

Pretty much as Pachipro said. I recently picked up a bottle of multivitamins for my family (made for over 50, but should be OK for a 20 year old) all almost "90 - 100%" of daily values. Hell, the cereal Total advertises 100% of your daily ___ . Minimum requirements.

Bones are made of calcium matrixes, you may as well take the max calcium you can take in order to prevent osteoperosis at that point.

I'm pretty sure there are bacteria-caused ulcers just like there are bacteria-causing acne (which is why medications like Benzaclin has both a regular acne fighter and an antibiotic just in case) but I've not heard of this.

Helicobacter pylori - Wikipedia

Around 80% of stomach ulcers are caused by the bacterium helicobacter pylori, and can usually be cured with a dose of antibiotics. The link was discovered in 1982 by two Australian scientists, Robin Warren and Barry Marshall; they were awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. It's surprising how long it's taking this discovery to reach public consciousness, even among people in the medical professions.
