I know its not japanese, but I was just wondering, how popular is metallica in japan?
I know they were doing pretty well there in the days of the black album, even though that album is overrated and generic

There is a diehard metal rock fan base in Japan, although they're not exactly prominent like the visual-kei fans who dress to stand out.

They were pretty poplular back in the late 80s & the early 90s when metal/hard rock in general was big here in Japan. My best friend was a huge fan back then. It seems to me that the all the Metal Heads from those times are now older, making the whole genre less visible in the media.

I was never a big fan but I do enjoy their version of Whisley In A Jar that is in my i-Pod these days.

well, you should listen to there old stuff, the black album, load, reload, and especially that piece of crap "st anger" weren't very good.
all the metal noobs loved the black album, but if you listen to their old stuff for a while, you really start to hate how generic the black album is.
but yeah, metallica has started to come back lately with their newest album "death magnetic." its not that great, but at least they are trying to go back their old style.
I am 22, and I had heard a few metallica songs here and there, but didn't actually start listening to them seriously until about a year ago.
I think everyone should hear "S&M," their symphony album, its freaking AWESOME!
Oh and whiskey in the jar is a good one too

as for new metal, its mostly generic garbage. new music in general is crap, espcially the garbage that is popular in america today, all this crappy hip hop and pop, like britney spears. damn idiots will listen to anything

metallica is NOT pop, at least not their first 4 albums, and unlike britney spearse, those first 4 albums were INCREDIBLE by metal standards, or by any other genre's standards.
I can understand why black album through st anger could be called "pop," because they sold out to get more fans, and they certainly did get more fans. The black album is one of the highest selling albums in history. its okay, but its just pretty generic, just so that metal noobs will like it.

I am just saying I appreciate a well-crafted music no matter what style it is in. A good piece of fluff is so much harder to produce than you may think.

I am sure Ms. Spears puts as much effort into the delivery of some jail-bait come-on lines in her songs as Mr. Hammett does into his riffs.

The producers of candy-pop fluff music set out to make candy-pop fluff. If they had aimed for metal and the result was Ooops! I Did It Again, they have obviously failed, but they are not trying to make metal in the first place.

If you or I enjoy listening to it is beside the point. I just do not see the reason for having to bash other types music to validate the one you like.

I listen to a broad array of music, and its obvious to ANYBODY that knows anything about music that britney sucks, period. I mean, she freaking lip syncs all her shows.
this is NOT about style, this is about talent. and I am critical with metallica too. st anger was a piece of crap album but it was made that way because they were going through some really hard times. the problem was releasing the album. it should have been scrapped, period.
but yeah, Like i said, I like lots of different styles: symphonic pieces/soundtracks, blues, jazz, (especially stuff like frank sinatra), metal of course, a little bit of techno, etc etc etc. the point is when music is bad, its bad, regardless of the genre

I do not know that as I am not a member of the "ANYBODY that knows anything about music" club. Also, I have never attended nor been interested enough to check out any of her shows, so I cannot comment on her lip-syncing skills either. lol

well, I want ot be REALLY careful with this following statement, but asians for some reason, seem to be infatuated with american pop, which is what a lot of countries have used as their model for creating their pop music. so, for some reason, our pop is idolized, even if it is britney spears.
The same can be said of americans that are fascinated with japan, some of them listen to Jpop, even if it is a bad Jpop band, they don't know the difference.
but yeah, I dont want this to be a hostile argument, I have wasted too much energy getting pissed at ppl.

It is perfectly natural for us to express our dislikes toward something, but I don't think calling those ppl who DO like it names and saying "Anyone who knows music.." blah blah blah is nice/necessary.

metallica's first 3 cds were so damn awesome, the next one, (and justice for all) wasn't bad, but losing cliff burton made their music worse.

I remember back in college, a couple of my dorm-mates would go on and on about the subject of Metallica versus Megadeth.

I tend to enjoy what people describe as "Selling-out"s. The Jayhawks' Sound Of Lies and Liz Phair's Top 40 make over comes to mind... It must be a dilemma(sic) for popular musicians. You achieve success/recognition for something and your fans expect you to stay in that same mode forever when it is quite possible that your taste and sensibilities change over time. It is rather sad when it is nothing but a business decision to sell more CDs but it IS a business after all.

well I hate to say "selling out" because its thrown around too much.
the bottom line is that the black album is REALLY generic, and its REALLY obvious they made the album that way so that ppl would buy it, ppl that aren't really into metal.
and the whole megadeth vs metallica argument is retarded. I hate it. it happened because dave mustaine, the first electric guitarist for metallica, got kicked out because he was a crazy drunk. then he formed megadeth. he went on bitching about it for like 20 years, literally. then he recently became a Chrstian and stopped complaining, thank god.
ether way they are two completely different bands, and their styles are uncomparable

Now with death magnetic and alike even their attitude to the crowd ended up being sucky..
I do security/ backstage work at several music festivals here and last summer when metallica were around, they openly voiced dislike for some of the crowd due to a single person showing he didn't like their music.
Also, compared to other artists they seem arrogant jerks nowadays.

I have only been on the job for two years now so I wouldn't know bout their old days, but after hearing from senior security members they appereanty were really nice back in the day.


On music, It just went downhill when saint anger came, but isn't it alike to every other band from back then now releasing new stuff?
Kiss, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, all releasing albums lately, but none being really good.

It's really disappointing as I grew up on their "old" music, usually accompanying my parents in biker bars.

Oh well, it's a good thing there's always new and fresh artists going around, along with music in different languages to enjoy x3

about the pop music thing, I once asked a band what their opinion on the quickly rising emo fad was, one of them denied emo existing " in america we just have scene kids" while the others just wen't "meh" Because Aiden has emo in their labelings it leg to a funny conversation about cutting, which led to talking about replacing cut off penisse with bright coloured dongs xP

I mean if some well known artists can be like that, any artist can.

in the end, usually label wise, I get to hear " Two types of music, good and bad, and it doesn't matter if it's mainstream or not, you either like it or don't like it"


On that case what I found was The Offspring's latest release.
Seven years between the last album and it almost sounds exactly the same with exclusion of a few tracks.

Honestly, If I'd go grand and be offered money to ride the mainstream, I'd do it.
But I'd also still like the fans and actually try to please them.
Money, the root of all evil, and commercialization xD

and the offspring is okay, but I wouldn't listen to them on my free time.
and the prroblem with a lot of mainstream music is that when you try to expand your audience, you have to alter your music. Usually that means watering it down for ppl that don't typically listen to it.

Do you ever listen to megadeth. dave mustaine is a legend on the guitar, and is way better than kirk hammett. Kirk is kind of an amateur, I don't know why metallica got him, not to mention he is a whining, crying girly man most of the time.

and by the way, i listen to very little rap, but most of what I listen to is Christian rap (I know, not a whole lot of good stuff there, but there is some good stuff in there)
