We have a tropical climate in Philippines so Flip Flops in "IN" here. I would like to know if in Japan or in other countries wears Flip Flops.

2 years ago while on vacation in Washington, D.C. we noticed almost every young person was in flip flops. In Maine you only see them at the beach, so we thought it very weird to see so many people in D.C. had them on.

In many parts of the US in the summer, flip flops, shorts and a tee-shirt seem to be the standard wear even in restaurants. Here in the south, they seem to required daily attire weather going shopping, going to a restaurant, or just out in public. Not my kind of wear, but it's what most people seem to wear when out and about. I also hear that it is standard wear for many American tourists when travelling overseas to foreign countries. Say it isn't so!!!

i actually wear this to the local conbini on a regular basis, It's convenient and easy. Of course the conbini is only about a block away, farther than that I do wear actual shoes. You can end up walking alot in Japan.
 
They're very well used at the beach here in the UK in the summer time when the weather is fine! (soz, just had to say it)
 
Flip-flops are very common as street wear here in southwestern Ohio, except when it gets cold. That is a relatively recent development. Although I tend to dress very casually, I never use flip-flops as street wear (for one thing, they would wear out too quickly).
 
I think I have heard somewhere (it probably was a Japanese TV show) that Flip Flops were a Japanese invention.

In the Navy, we called flip-flops shower shoes, because we wore them in the stalls to prevent slips and falls and general ***-busting. But to wear those damn things on the street? Sorry, I've never understood that and never will. Hell, I've seen people wear flip-flops well into November, and I live in the northeast!! I for one wouldn't want to be buried in those things, never mind wear them in public!

Waaaait a sec..... so, has this all been a plug for a company in the Philippines that sells flip flops?? :eek: I thought bringing up flip flops was rather random... lol I mean, I don't think it is everyday you think to yourself, "Hmmmmm.... I wonder how popular flip flops are in different parts of the world...". IF this has not been a plug, my apologies for being a jerk. Please continue on with the discussion.
 
i have also seen a new trend with the young people of wear "house shoes" or slippers outside. kinda defeats the purpose of have house shoes yeah?

Yes, I remember quite well that they were called "shower shoes" in the Navy, although I haven't heard them called that for years. Their old status as "shower shoes" based on my Navy days may have something to do with my reluctance to wear them on the street. On the other hand, I have seen other people use them as regular street wear going back as far as 1968. I think the main reason for my reluctance to wear them on the street is that they just aren't sturdy enough, to me.

Going slightly off topic and going back to 1968, I was a bit perplexed by the Navy's insistence that sailors going on liberty dress far better than the vast majority of the local people in the Philippines. The way the Navy expected us to dress, we might as well have been wearing signs saying "I have much more money than you do."

No this isn't a plug or something. I just to share it with others to know if it is also the same with other countries.
 
Good question! in Buffalo and Western New York state, they are becoming more common as NY becomes more tropical and less formal--I'm even picking habit up from my kids. Cheap, easy, good for not walking too far or over rough ground. Sliding thru November and waiting for skiing and tracking snow, my flip flops stay in the closet.
Changing subject, reason for this search is--loved Worldcon, Nippon 07 in 2007, missed Daicon7 in 2008. I am forced to schedule '09's vacation soon. Is there a Daicon8 or similar Japanese SF convention in can plan to visit? Any info or hints greatly appreciated.
 
lol someone from the philippines, I used to live there when I was 2-4 years old. Back to the topic, I am sure there will be japanese people who would wear flip-flops, I do since its kinda cumbersome to tie and untie your shoe and putting on and off your socks. lol.
 
I can't wear flip-flops, that bit of plastic that goes between your toes does my head in. I wore Doc Martens eight eye boots for years, until just a few weeks ago. Wore them student style, with 14 eye laces threaded only to the seventh eye, then wrapped round and round. It's an art ;-) I wear Doc Martens sandals in summer too. Anyway, I realised I'm a bit old for those boots now. The main thing for me is comfort so I spent an hour in a huge shoe superstore and tried on practically every pair. I ended up with a pair of Skechers shoes, which are amazingly comfortable, and look pretty cute too. I promise this is not a shameless plug LOL 😊
