"Mo" here is used to emphasise the number.

You can say
"10 man nin no hito ga nakunarimashita."
"no" is a particle meaing "of"
People of one hundred thousand (= one hundred thousand people) died.

And by adding "mo" after "10 man nin", it expresses surprise, shock, etc. about the huge number of victims.

That's my understanding of it, but I'm a bit at a loss as to just what 何とはなしに and どことなく mean.

Yes, you can say;

Ginkou de 10man en mono okane ga nusumaremashita.
(At the bank 100,000 Yen was stolen.)

And as you use "mo", it implies "such a big amout as JPY100,000!" feeling.

I was taught it's used as an exaggerater..or? anyways

ano nimotsu ga monosugoku omoi yo

I dunno if that's even right..but you get my idea.

Just checked on 何とはなしに and どことなく, and both of them have なんとなく in the definitions, and they seem to have a meaning like "I can't really put my finger on it" or "I can't really explain..." That makes it seem like ものすごい would be similar in meaning to すごいものがある.

So, rethinking the definition, it's probably more like "to be in said condition although I can't explain why," or something like that. That probably doesn't help much, though.

Mono isn't necessarily an exaggeration, it is used to express emotion, but as a sentence particle can be used for a reason or in an excuse (especially by women ! ) which is what I think you can be getting at.

Shikata ga nai deshou. Benkyou shitakunai yo. Byouki ni nattan da mono.
