I was as astonished to learn about this. Was her career that important? What is the messaging here for other Asian women with epicanthic folds in their eyes? This standard of beauty or rounded eyelids was from Anglo Europe and regarded as beautiful by Asians with low self-esteem. Epicanthic folds are just as attractive as round eyes, but even more so depending on the beholder.

I do not care what school of beauty you come from, but to force low self esteem Asians to ruin their faces by looking Anglo is wrong! It was wrong back in ancient times, and it is wrong today. I am concerned about the messaging and its impact on other people with epicanthic folds in their eyes. Asians are not the only race with Asian folds in their eyes.

She probably got a nose job too. She wasn't forced to do it. It's a decision she made 27 years ago.
In hindsight it's probably one of the smartest things she ever did given what she has achieved and she's still making bank.
But it's sad that society places such pressure on people to change themselves.

Although I agree with your call on racism here, I think this is part of a universal problem of male-dominated media imposing their standards of beauty. Many women in the media have found themselves out of a job when they reach a certain age or their hair starts to go grey, and the Japanese tabloids certainly like to whip themselves into a froth of excitement about "bijin ana". We need to grow out of this. (As an aside, has anyone noticed the unusually 'hot' traffic safety model on the posters this year? - Really! It's not needed!)

I'm rethinking my stance on the nose job. I looked her closely during the Big Brother finale and it seemed more similar to her younger photo.
Perhaps the later photo was touched up. Or just a trick of the light.

I prefer her after picture... she went from a 5 to an 8 but that's just my western beauty standards talking.

For augmentation, look to Molly Millions (johnny mnemonic/neuromancer) in the early 80s (at least in sci-fi).

And korea is popularly known as the plastic surgery capitol of the world. Removal of the folds was being done there even back in the 70s. Are those kpop stars actually trying to look 'western'?
