Item details

Visit Oita is the official English-language tourism website for Oita Prefecture (大分県) in northeastern Kyushu. Operated by the Oita Prefectural Tourism Association, Tourism Oita (ツーリズムおおいた) provides a comprehensive guide to sightseeing, hot springs, food, culture, accommodation, events, and transport throughout the prefecture. The site is aimed particularly at international visitors and is also available in Korean, simplified and traditional Chinese, and Thai.

Oita is especially associated with onsen, and hot-spring travel forms a major part of the website. It introduces famous destinations such as Beppu Onsen (別府温泉) and Yufuin Onsen (由布院温泉), as well as Kannawa, Myōban, and Hita, along with numerous smaller hot-spring areas. Guides explain Japanese bathing customs and onsen etiquette, and there is practical information for first-time visitors, including a feature on tattoo-friendly hot springs. Beppu's famous Jigoku Meguri (地獄めぐり), or "hells" tour, and the traditional jigoku-mushi method of cooking food with geothermal steam are also covered.

The website reaches well beyond Oita's best-known hot-spring resorts. Its destination and attraction guides cover Oita City, Beppu, Yufu, Hita, Nakatsu, Usa, the Kunisaki Peninsula, Bungotakada, Usuki, Saiki, Taketa and Bungo-Ōno, among other areas. Natural attractions include mountain landscapes, ravines, flower parks, and coastal scenery, while cultural and historical sites include temples, shrines, castle towns, Buddhist heritage, and traditional streetscapes. Bungotakada's Shōwa-era district, the historic city of Usuki, and destinations associated with the manga and anime Attack on Titan are among the featured themes.

Food is another important part of the guide. Oita is known for seafood from the Bungo Channel, as well as dishes and products such as toriten (chicken tempura), karaage, dango-jiru, kabosu citrus, and regional beef. The site combines conventional restaurant and food information with articles on local experiences, including seafood, cooking and Beppu's geothermal cuisine.

For travellers planning a journey rather than researching individual attractions, Visit Oita provides suggested itineraries and themed travel stories. These range from introductory guides for first-time visitors to routes combining Oita with other parts of Kyushu. Seasonal information explains what visitors can expect at different times of year, while feature articles cover topics such as Yufuin, local history, food experiences, sightseeing trains and seasonal scenery.

Practical travel planning is well represented. Dedicated sections explain how to reach Oita and how to travel within the prefecture, alongside a reservations portal, downloadable brochures and useful external links. Current notices can include weather, disaster-prevention, transport and temporary-closure information, making the site useful both before departure and during a visit.

Visit Oita is the successor to the former Discover Oita English-language tourism website and represents Tourism Oita's newer multilingual approach to promoting the prefecture overseas. For anyone planning a trip to Oita, particularly Beppu, Yufuin, and the less-visited areas of eastern Kyushu, it is a useful official starting point for discovering attractions, onsen, regional food, accommodation, events, and transport.
