Im happy to have found a site about japan, I must say.

around where I live (North of Holland actually, but I am brittish and have an English passport) most people don't talk about much else than tractors ("trekkers"), scooters and cheese. Let alone different countries or cultures.

still, some respectable blokes around. One of them is actually learning Japanese too.

what more to tell...?
Humm. I'm 16 (you probably cant be bothered to check all the profils of the dudes around here) and I'm doing "5 VWO" (5th class (dutch school system) of Voortgezet Wetenscappelijk Onderwijs, which is actually the highest level of dutch education. I'm concentrating on Physics, Chemistry (Alchemy....) and involentuarily Maths too.)


er, yeah. that's about it...
I'll go watch cowboy Bebop now, I think...

Hey, welcome aboard, Yakutatazu from N.Holland.
It sounds like you're having a socially-slow-going-but-academically-interesting yr there. Well, my yrs in physics and chemistry were okay; and they got even better with the mathematically more advanced physical chemistry with a dash of statistical physics and thermodynamics, but yeah, math becomes ever more important to get anything deeper than the 1st yr college level. Alchemy sounds interesting as it leaves some mystery for more study, but classical stuff is interesting enough. Academics aside, hope to see you often, do participate, and also post some interesting topics you have--for either serious, personal, or just small talk.

"socially-slow"? well, I wouldn't really say that...
neither would my teachers, methinks...

anyway, the reason I'm here is to learn japanese, as I want to go to Japan and maybe stay there for a year.

quick question, why is here (in manga's) sometimes a small "tsu" (like as in to double the next syllable's consonant) behind a sound or something. like behind "kuso" (yes, I do know the meaning, I appologise if some stuck up right-winger is offended)

WOW, tractors and cheeze for topics? The Forum should be a jump into excitement compared to that? There are a lot of young people your age here, so you should fit in well. There is a ton of info here to help you with Japanese if you're willing to read old posts and maybe even use the SEARCH function.It does sound like it might be a good story on how you ended up in Holland; bet it has to do with one or both of your parents? Let alone different countries or cultures," but I guess the conversations can lag while the socialising can still be active...sorry no offense meant.

As for the lower-case tsu 窶堙? do they appear after the last syllable of an utterance ? And are they often accompanied by an exclamation point "!" ? If so, I wonder if the tacit tsu 窶堙 might not have stood for the glottal stop /?/ which involves the closure-pressurising-release of the glottis as in the released sound in a plosive heavy breathing sound.

my dad could get a permanent job at the ASTRON (astronomy) here, so they stayed. I was born after. do not call me dutch if you don't want to die.

Greetings from the Japan Alps yakutatazu san ! Sounds like you are in a great atmosphere for study, and I wish I were too--I mean more of one than that which I am in.

That ending small '窶堙? or sometimes 'ﾆ鍛' carries the weight as a few others have mentioned, as far as I have gathered, and implies a sudden stop to the word, which in turn, implies surprize or the raising of ones voice as in shouting. But, at times seems to imply strength to a tag question. You'll often find it in cell phone mesgs after '窶堙業鍛 !'
