The chilly autumn weather makes me want to have a nice bowl of oden--Japanese vegetable stew. Instead of making it yourself, you can get some at your favorite conbini. But the best place to get some, IMO, is at a yatai--temporary food stall.
Sadly, yatais are disappearing in Tokyo. There are none in Shibuya AFAIK and in Ebisu--fogeddaboutit. So I have go to Shinjuku but maybe that gives it a special charm.
A yatai stall in Shinjuku. Oden and nihonshuu (sake) atsukan (heated). Be carefull of the karashi (mustard) , oden without karashi is too bland but too much and you'll regret it!
The yatai stand in the picture is near the upper level West entrance of Shinjuku station. If you wander around the station you may find others. I think Shimbashi also has a few around the station. Mind you, yatai stands don't appear until 8 or 9 pm.

Thanks.
Do they open till late night? or should I ask what time they close business usually. Would love to try out oden at yatai for supper. Does the yatai in the picture sells oden?
Yes, the food stall pictured sells oden. You know you can get it from almost any convenience store, and most of my friends (foreigners) don't care for it. But I like it at a yatai because it has "atmosphere". And its healthy, mostly vegetables.
Yatais are usually open till late at night, maybe 12 A.M. or later depending on the proprietor.
>I don't know about that... 90% of what I see in that picture is fish.
Gomen, that's because we ate all the vegetable stuff. Let's see, there was daikon (of course), konyakku, konbu (still 1 piece left), shiitake, and that fried bean curd thing. And someone had a carrot.
