Heterololigo is a monotypic squid genus comprising a single species, Heterololigo bleekeri. Although some researchers still consider it part of the genus Loligo, genetic evidence supports its classification as a distinct genus. This species is commonly known as the spear squid, or yari-ika in Japanese.
When served fresh, yari-ika retains a slight translucence. After about a day, it becomes fully opaque and white, developing a distinctive sweetness that's highly prized. In spring, female spear squid are especially sought after, as they are often simmered and served with their eggs still inside—a seasonal delicacy. Just before serving, the itamae makes fine cuts across the surface of the tane to tenderise the flesh and enhance its texture.
