Where to buy cheap training shoes?

I'm looking to buy a generic "running shoe / tennis shoe / training shoe / sneaker" (depending on what you call them in your local dialect). It does not have to good, it only needs to be cheap.

Basically my local gym requires you to change into a different "training shoe looking shoe" as your "indoor shoe" before you can enter the training room. Otherwise you must rent a shoe for 100yen, which is fine, but filling in the register is annoying.

Can anyone recommend a good source for this? Either online or brick-and-mortar. I went to an 'ABC Mart', but they only seemed to have brands like Nike etc, and nothing cheaper than 7000yen.

Most of the gyms require "indoor shoes".
You may buy el-chipo ones, that would fit the requirement, but think how the shoes make you get the most out of the training.
If you are in lifting weights, then ok. Not good for the treadmill.
Edit: we pay 14,000 yen a month for the gym and daughters' swimming lessons at the same Axtos .

Yes I have no problem with indoor training shoes (keeps the indoor floor cleaner etc), but in that case some slipper-shoes would do. It's just for weightlifting. They actually even require your shorts to 'look gym-short like'. I arrived wearing denim shorts and received the 'problem face' . Maybe this is a public gym thing.

If you don't care about the look, you might try the "cheaper area's" of the cities, like Ueno's Ameyoko, or Osaka's Tennoji.

Regarding your shorts, I have to say I understand the gym's policy. As a gym you try to have a certain image that matches with the monthly subscription fee. If there's no "class", people who mind the image will look for a different gym. For the gym to fall apart it only takes one foreigner in denim shorts, and the rest will follow

you can try to look online for some sport shoes, they are cheaper than in the shops, but i think there is no difference between regular sport shoes and the weight-lifting ones
