When talking to classmates, should I use "-kun"?

Mike Cash said:
I've never even heard a Japanese male infant use "watashi". Always "boku" or "ore" (or perhaps their own name with or without "chan" stuck on).

If you will notice, each of my statements regarding this has been carefully qualified, and not presented as broad absolute truths about the population as a whole.

Glad to see I'm not the only one.

Another question on this topic: When speaking with my sensei, should I use "watashi" instead of "boku"? Yamasa's a pretty informal school (by necessity, to an extent) but I'm curious what the norm is regarding this? Usage is hard to pin down.

I think that "boku" is all right for 99% of situations I can think of. I'd say you should keep "watashi" to very formal occasions speaking to the higher ups and to formal writing.
Of course, using "watashi" is nice, especially with older people like me.

The cases I know of are boys in the US without a Japanese father in the house and learned feminine language from their mother or sister...
