What to do after having learned Hiragana?

I practiced hiragana until I could sight-read it with approximately the same facility with which I could sight-read English. I've yet to deliberately learn any vocabulary --though I have acquired some new words, purely by accident. Should I commence learning grammar and syntax, or should I learn katakana fluently first?

Start on grammar/vocab, while working on your katakana on the side. Most beginner courses use kana, so you'll have some reinforcement of your hiragana/katakana as you go along anyway.

I agree with nekojita in that it's better to learn vocab and grammar at the same time as katakana. Whilst katakana is important to learn, there's no reason why you can't start learning beginners vocab and grammar at the same time! It will all tie in together eventually as well. In addition to vocab and grammar in the beginning it might be useful to learn some basic introductory phrases as well if you haven't already.

I find it hard to see how anyone could learn to sight-read hiragana to that degree of proficiency without intentionally learning any vocabulary or grammar. What are you reading in hiragana if not Japanese words and sentences?

I only recite the syllables, and don't understand what I'm reading. I know it's quite strange, but that is how I practice.
