What is employment like post-tsunami?

Hi all,

I have always planned on moving to Japan to work. I am a musician and want to work for sony or avex at any capacity.

What is the current situation like in Japan? I know with the tsunami and earthquake the economy got a big shock and wonder what it really is like there at the moment.

What is consumer behaviour like post-earthquake? Im guessing with such a devastation people wont be sitting around listening to music.

Is it worth applying for a position right now at all? Or should I hold off a bit?

I'm sorry to say that it's too early to talk about post-earthquake/post-tsunami situation, since they are not the past - we are still in the middle of it.

Everyone is trying hard to help/support all the people affected. Many lost loved ones, got injured, lost home, and suffering from the lack of food, water, electricity, fuel for heaters/transportation, etc.

Definitely a bad timing to look for a job.
 
Consumer behavior? There are lines sometimes miles long to get gasoline, if you can get it at all. Food distribution has also been affected and if you find something at the store you go ahead and buy it whether it is something you want or not, as something beats nothing at all. For the most part, shelves are bare of staples. And I'm not talking about the places directly hit, by the way. I'm talking about hundreds of kilometers from there.

This is not the time to head for Japan to start your life's new adventure. We're going to be quite a while climbing out of this mess.
 
Do you have any idea of what has happened? This is going to affect everyone in Japan for a long time to come.
 
Geez! What a question! Hasn't even been 4 days since the largest recorded quake in the country, and one of the largest in the world, and you are wondering about consumer behavior. Some people don't even have food or shelter (in the affected areas). Some have rolling blackouts. In other places it's business as usual.

If you (or anyone else) are interested in finding work here, stay away from the Sendai region (perhaps even Tokyo) for a while, but don't ask what "consumer behavior" is like.

You want to work at Sony. Ok, where are their offices? Do you qualify for a work visa? How good is your Japanese language ability? When do you want to come? What kind of music job do you expect?
 
wow I had no idea things were so bad. i didnt know the scale of things were to that extent and i am shocked by everything i am hearing.

i sound insensitive with this thread but it is something i am very curious about. i seem to have offended people with my question and in hindsight now i see why. however please understand i asked because i really didnt know things were so severe.

on the other hand I do believe it is a legitimate question that anybody interested in economy has pondered upon and it is quite a big question that needs to be addressed. yes a disaster has occurred but the world moves on and the country must look to recover as soon as possible. instead of being booted to the corner for asking my question on here ive found many other news sources that are answering my questions on this topic if anybody is interested.

where abouts is everybody from? im very sad to hear the reality of what is happening. where is everybody affected going to go/stay?

Short answer, it is going to take months before we will know the full extent of the damage to the economy. Unless you have secured a job from where you are , I would not recommend coming over.
 
How can you possibly not know the severity? Oh, I know. You didn't even bother to look on any Internet news report.

As to where I am, Hokkaido.
 

Yeah, not really a great time to be thinking about starting a new life in Japan! You should inquire about volunteering with a charity to go over there and help.

erm....seriously? im not going to travel halfway around the world to stick my neck out in a place where even the locals are fleeing.

I hope youre volunteering.

i hope you die from radiation poisoning, Mike, so when I do, I wont have to be in the same country as you.

what is with you people? i ask this question everywhere else and this place is the only place where people seem to have attitude issues.
 
You're so incredibly self-centered you don't realize how dismissively insulting of Japan and the Japanese people your why-should-I-stick-my-neck-out-for-them remark was? But since from the very first post you revealed exactly the same thing AND HAD IT POINTED OUT TO YOU it is apparent you really don't notice.

Good riddance! All my life I've chuckled at that old one-line joke, "....Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the show?" But you are first person I've ever encountered who strikes me as actually being capable of blithely making such utterances.

Conclusion; first get some more information before asking questions, second it's not the time to find a job in the area of especially the Sendai(and for now Tokyo). So wait a couple of monts/ years or find a job in other areas of Japan.
