Education Waseda University revokes enrolment of five students over TOEIC cheating

Waseda University has withdrawn the enrolment of five graduate students after confirming they had cheated on the TOEIC English proficiency test. The test's organiser invalidated the results of 803 examinees last year after uncovering organised cheating involving Chinese graduate students and others. According to Waseda, 52 of the annulled scores had been submitted as part of its undergraduate and graduate admissions process.

Alongside the five students already enrolled, the university also rescinded offers to three prospective graduate students who had passed the entrance examination but had not yet begun their studies. In another case, an undergraduate who failed the graduate school entrance exam was suspended without a set end date. Waseda said it will take firm action whenever cheating is discovered to protect the fairness of its admissions process.

Other universities, including the University of Tsukuba and the Tokyo University of Science, have also cancelled enrolments or admission offers in cases involving TOEIC cheating. The test organiser says it will tighten identity checks to prevent impersonation.

Tangential, but I wonder why they're using TOEIC and not TOEFL/IELTS.

Edit: TOEIC is more business oriented, and even a max score (990) is not particularly high on the TOEFL (I'd have to google for the IBT version, but max TOEIC might only be 450 on the paper version of the TOEFL, when most US grad schools want TOEFL 550-600, so that grad-level academic reading/writing and understanding lectures and general grad level work is possible.

I'm not as familial with IELTS, but I know there are two flavors, depending on what your goal/purpose may be.
