UsingJapanese lang keyboard in Win98SE

I have just installed a native japanese lang keyboard on my win98SE PC.

What must I do in order to use the japanese keys in real time (ie. pressing the 'か' gives 'か' and not english 't', etc.)?

Microsoft IME will only convert the romaji I type into kana/kanji.

I've changed my keyboard layout in Control Panel/keyboard to Japanese A01 (while retaining the language at English).

Please help.

There's a way to do this, but I forgot. AFAIK, even changing your keyboard will only change the key layout (English 101 and Japanese 10X are slightly different). You'll need to google it... maybe in Japanese. Can I ask why you would want this though? After working in several very large Japanese offices, I've never seen anyone use this.

I don't know if the IME is similar on WIN98SE but with the WIN2000 IME you can right-click the input mode icon in the taskbar, choose Properties, and then on the General tab change "Input method" to Kana Input.

Now whether or not the key layout it uses will be close to what's on an actual japanese keyboard...no clue.

I think all that does is means you still type roman characters in accordance to their Japanese phoentic, but the character displayed will be katakana, not hiragana and won't be converted to kanji. Take that with a shaker of salt though.
