Using a US laptop in Japan?

So if our hotels in Tokyo/Kyoto have internet access, would we be able to just plug in our laptop and use the internet? Or will it not work because its a US PC on a JP network?

I am writing this reply on my Gateway laptop in Japan at the moment. It works just fine. You do need an adapter plug as their outlets only have two slots...not the third round one. I bought one here.

power outlets are non-polarized and ungrounded here, so as goldiegirl mentioned you'll probably need an adapter for that. Everything else works the same.

Mine worked fine also. I already had an adapter kit. Once in Japan, I was good to go.

I know the power can be adapted/converted. My question was more about the hotel LAN/ISP. However, as goldiegirl seems to have answered it, I dont think it will be a problem.

Things like that are international standards - if your laptop is set to automatically get an IP address (via DHCP) then you should only have to plug in.

If it isn't set to do that (not likely, unless you manually changed the settings) then its a simple matter to change it back
