Tsunami warnings

Now I know why we received tsunami warnings all night long, the first one around 00:30 (we live at least 20 km from the sea on a hill)...

The BBC has posted in a very recent article the images from a satellite that uses a radar band that can "see" through the ash and particles and a significant area of land that used to be above water is gone.

I also believe I saw some reference in an article yesterday to this being the first time Japan was hit with a tsunami from an event such as this.

The scientists will be studying this one for a long time.

But immediate concern will be getting fresh water to Tonga. Then food. And along with trying to find out who might be in trouble in areas away from the capital.

Does anyone know if that undersea cable to Tonga was damaged? That is their Internet connection using wires.

A little update on the tsunami warnings: it seems that only residents of Kanagawa were affected by the flood of alerts.


The prefectural government, in turn, was inundated with complaints after faulty software sent out 20-30 emails and messages to each resident in the night from Saturday to Sunday. Today, the governor apologised.

Meanwhile, seismologists speculate that shock waves caused Sunday's high tidal surge.
