Travelling across japan.

Im a UK resident and am planning a trip to japan in the next few years.

I'm wondering is it actually possible for me t just go to japan and travel around for about a year? just arrive and pick a a place on the map and go there.

Could i actualy do that? or is that just a stupid romantic thing?

also if i can what kind of VISA would i need??

Only if your country has a tourist visa agreement with Japan allowing you to stay beyond the 90-day (or whatever the visa limit is) limit.

You can get a 90 day temporary visitor visa on arrival, if you want to stay for a year you'll have to look into getting other types. You could definitely travel around Japan for a year, staying in some places for a while, picking up the language... It's a big country, from the snow capped mountains of north Hokkaido down to the tropical islands of Okinawa.

If you're going round bit by bit then travel expenses won't be so bad, but over large distances the prices will be quite high (most people only go for a few weeks so buy the rail pass).
