Translation Relay Marathon!

I had this idea for a game.

Basically it involves translating fairly short articles / Japanese text into English but to make it a bit more interesting there are a few more rules.

Each translation has to have some common theme to the last posted translation. (e.g. if the first is about video games in Japan the second could be about the Final Fantasy series).

You can't post another translation immediately after one of your own translations.

Within each GMT day whoever has the most translations done is crowned King / Queen of the day. Whoever has done translations for the most consecutive GMT days is declared Emperor of the Translation Relay Marathon.

I'd suggest the source text be, available online, between 150 and 500 characters and be an entire article / section / post.

So ... anybody interested?

I'll give it a few more hours to see if anybody else is interested. (Might try posting on sci.lang.japan and another forum or two).

Yay! Well three is enough to get started - hopefully more people will join in if it looks like fun.

I'll post my first translation as soon as I can finish it - but given this is a 'race' don't let that stop anybody posting one before me.

Here it is. I'm really not happy with my translation of 総点検 but I've given up thinking about it.

技術試験衛星VIII型（ETS-VIII）

383 characters.

「総点検」を完了し、ETS-VIII開発がリスタート

システムプロトフライト試験を中断し、 2004年3月から実施してきた ETS-VIII の「総点検」を、このたび完了しました。
この「総点検」は火星探査機「のぞみ」や地球観測衛星「みどりII 」の不具合を受け、JAXAで開発中の衛星プロジェクトで実施されたものです。
総点検の結果、衛星と地上システムについて改善すべき課題が抽出されて対処方法が決められ、宇宙開発委員会にも報告されています。
総点検で明らかになった課題についての対処を終え、ETS-VIII はシステムプロトフライト試験を再開します。

写真は、宇宙開発委員会衛星総点検専門委員会の現地視察を受けるETS-VIII。
左側の筒状のものが推進モジュール、中央手前の枠がペイロードモジュール、中央奥がアンテナタワー、右奥の枠がバスモジュール。総点検のため分解されていました。

"General Inspection" complete, ETS-VIII development restarts.

The ETS-VIII "general inspection" carried out since the system protoflight test was interrrupted, since 2004 March, is now complete.
This "general inspection" was required to be carried out as (ETS-VIII was) a satellite project under development when the Mars probe Nozomi and the Earth observation satellite Midori II suffered anomalies.
As a result of the general inspection the methods required for dealing with the satellite and ground systems improvement tasks were decided upon and* reported to the space development committee.
The required countermeasure tasks made clear in the general inspection will be completed and then the ETS-VIII system protoflight test will recommence.

The photo shows ETS-VIII undergoing on the spot visual inspection by the satellite general inspection specialist members of the space development committee.
The cylindrical object on the left side is the propulsion module, the frame in the centre-front is the payload module, centre-back is the antenna tower, the frame at the right-back is the bus module - separated for inspection.

FYI, one character got mangled. I believe it was 実施. Considering this will be used to study, thought I'd point that out.

However, there is one thing that must be pointed out:

The phrase in boldface means: "As a result of general inspection"

Yeah, JAXA mixed Western characters with Japanese - always a recipe for trouble in this forum.
