Tourism Toshimaen closed after 94 years

Yesterday, the oldest and largest amusement park in Tokyo, Toshimaen (としまえん), closed its gates after 94 years. Located in Nerima Ward, it opened in September 1926 and featured some 30 attractions, one of which was a German carousel from 1907. The 22-hectare sized area will be converted into a Harry Potter theme park.

The new Harry Potter theme park, slated to open in the first half of 2023 over an area of approximately 30,000 square meters, will display film sets, costumes and props used by the fantasy films based on the popular novels of the same name by British author J.K. Rowling. It will be the second such facility after Warner Bros. Studio Tour London -- The Making of Harry Potter, which opened in Britain in 2012 and has seen over 1.4 million visitors, according to Seibu Railway Co., which owns Toshimaen.

I heard that the number of visitors had dropped significantly in recent years, but it is sad to see another Tokyo landmark disappear.

Probably a smart business move but still sad to see the past wiped away. Better than turning into an office park or housing I guess.
