News Tokyo to remove Nihonbashi flyover

I wish it wasn't restricted to Nihonbashi: Metropolitan Expressway Co. will start removing the elevated expressway built over the Kandagawa in the Nihonbashi area. The project is scheduled to be completed by May 2041.

Metropolitan Expressway Co. invited media Friday to view the work to remove the elevated expressway, which will be rerouted underground as part of a 320 billion yen ($2.3 billion) renewal project. [...] The expressway was built as part of the network connecting 1964 Tokyo Olympics venues with Haneda airport. A significant portion of the expressway in central Tokyo was built over rivers and canals to minimize the need for land purchase negotiations and complete construction in time for the Olympics. Metropolitan Expressway plans to construct a 1.1-kilometer underground tunnel in the area while removing the overpass by March 2041. [...] The cost of the replacement work will be shouldered by the expressway operator, municipalities and companies planning the redevelopment of the Nihombashi area.

This is brilliant news. That whole area, and actually so many of Tokyo's waterways are potentially huge assets that could be huge attractions if revitalized.

I have no sources to back it up, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's cleaner today than in the 1960s.

In Fukuoka 1971&72 . each summer the base beach had to be bulldozed clean of tons of plastic waste to use it. The rivers that ran through Fukuoka were always filled with trash ; smelly & dirty.

After 77 years, Tokyo will have restored blue skies over Nihonbashi by relocating its expressways underground and transforming its historic centre by fiscal 2040.

The Yaesu Tunnel, normally busy with around 100,000 vehicles passing through daily, was completely empty during a media tour on Friday, marking the beginning of a major transformation. The tunnel section shown to the media had been closed earlier this month on April 5th. A new construction project will partially relocate about 1.8 kilometers of the Yaesu Line, from Kandabashi Junction to Edobashi Junction, underground. The Metropolitan Expressway, which has been in operation for more than 60 years, faces urgent needs for aging infrastructure repairs. As part of a broader renovation effort, the Tokyo Expressway's KK Line—an iconic route—has also been permanently closed, drawing a curtain on its long history. The newly built underground tunnel is scheduled to reopen in fiscal 2035. This shift underground will not only update the aging network but also dramatically change the face of Tokyo above ground. In particular, the elevated expressway running over Nihonbashi is planned for removal by fiscal 2040, restoring the open sky to the historic bridge.
