Sports Tokyo selected to host Los Angeles Olympic qualifying series

The International Olympic Committee announced on 7 May that Tokyo has been selected as a host city for the Olympic Qualifying Series, where athletes will compete for spots at the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike described the decision as "a great honour." She said the event would give the city a chance to present its appeal to an international audience, alongside youth culture, which she said fits naturally with urban sports.


Tokyo will host the opening event of the four-part qualifying series. The Japanese Olympic Committee plans to hold the competition in and around Yoyogi Park. Several sports are expected to be staged together in one area, with organisers aiming for a festival-like atmosphere rather than a conventional tournament setting. Attention is likely to spill into nearby districts such as Shibuya and Harajuku, both closely associated with youth culture and street fashion.

In recent years I've found the Olympic Games to be the 'enshittification' of the (skilled) sports. The IOC's modification of rules to make 'theirs' makes the sports rubbish! Olympic Judo? Olympic Tae Kwon Do? Olympic Karate? A narrow escape. The All Japan Kendo Federation made subtle anti-doping moves to avoid Kendo being included in the Olympics partly for this reason, despite South Korea doing their very best to get it included (S. Korea is much better at competition Kendo/Kumdo than the Japanese - the other reason).
