wondering what the verb is for
eg. to be raised in social standing/work
like being promoted in work

(passive and causative please)

To be promoted to (literally, to rise to): ...に昇進する
To promote someone: ...を...に昇進させる

Or 出世する / 出世させる

These are all intransitive, so passive forms 昇進/昇格/出世される work as passive of adversity.

I'm not usually the guy to post the funny or the interessant things but,

社長にゴマをして（ご機嫌をとって）、出世します

Learned that some time ago in my books, if you want to talk about "butter up someone to get a promotion for example", could be useful to you someday.

(する is a godan verb 擂る "to grind", not an irregular verb する "to do", in ゴマをする.)

It's understandable since 擂る is 常用外 and usually written in hiragana. The noun form is ゴマすり(ゴマをすること or ゴマをする人), which is also commonly used, shows that it's not する "to do", though.
Incidentally, these two する have different pitch accents. The accent is on the first syllable in 擂る (type1 /す]る/), whereas する "to do" is flat (type0 /する=/).
