Tips on staying on your toes with RAW anime?

I am trying to get myself into learning to understand RAW anime, non-subtitled anime with original Japanese dialogue, and it goes WAY too fast O_O;

Is there any-way possible to slow down both the video and audio or just the audio so it is MUCH slower and I can actually hear each letter(s) said clearly?

A good way to follow along with the dialog is to watch the show with the Japanese subtitles on until you get used to it. I know it's not easy to get DVDs with Japanese subtitles in the US, but a lot of the Hong Kong-made anime DVDs on eBay do have Japanese subtitles.

Yes, this is what I do with movies, I watch a movie say---- ten times, Dare mo Shiranai is a good example... I know the plot, I understand what's happening, and I watch it without subtitles, so I know what they are talking about, and concentrate only on what they are SAYING...

I'll also say that you should do this with MOVIES, not anime, you'll get a better appreciation and exposure to more natural Japanese.

Is this a serious question? Unless you want to watch the Dragon Ball Z characters speak in extremely low, slow-mo voices, this is not possible. If it's going way too fast for you, maybe you shouldn't base your study load on cartoons intended for a fluent audience. Don't push yourself too hard. Instead, work on more appropriate material suited for students in your skill range.

Perhaps a different choice in anime would help? If you're watching something that's going too fast, maybe try something meant for a younger audience. Sure it might not be the most fascinating stuff in the world but it may improve your basic Japanese, lol

DBZ is more or less intended for hyperactive 8 year old Japanese boys... I can't even imagine the type of horrific language skills you would develop from watching it...

Doraemon definitely is a good choice. I've used the episodes for study material on several occasions, and plus it's like part of Japan's cultural heritage. But for some reason, hardly anyone in the West has ever heard of it. Good stuff though, and easier to follow than most anime.

Slowin speed down is helpin me a lot....

I convert sometimes anime/movies to mpeg2 so that i can use windvd's speed scale function (only works wit mpg1/2).

Then u can play it from 0.5x up to 2.0x. After watchin 2/3 movies in 0.75x and 1x (first at 0.75 then in real speed) my hearin got alot better.

This is an intriguing idea. I have long been convinced that having opportunities to practice with slower materials would help me form a solid basis for faster listening comprehension, but have yet to try it. I just might.

Doraemon can indeed be good as it has relatively simple and slow dialogs.
Anywhere in particular I can get a RAW doraemon episode?
