-update-
Sergeant Noel scanned the area through his binoculars. He could not help but admire the quaint beauty of this new world. In his thirty years of service in the Andraian 21st Regiment he stood upon many worlds some strange and horrifying. While others were wonderous and breathtaking. This world, however, reminded him of his homeworld of Andra. Noel could still remember warm spring day he left home to honor his family as a member of the imperial guard.
'Trust in the Emperor and he shall protect you.' A faint smile crossed his lips remembering his mother's words of wisdom. Yes, no matter what hellhole he was sent to Noel always put his trust in the Emperor and his mother had been right. The Emperor had kept him alive for thirty years with only a couple of close calls. He ran his fingers along the patch work of scars that littered his face. Each had its own story ranging from battles against the fire warriors of the Tau to the savagery of an ork 'Waaagh!' Thirty years of death, glory, and ;Emperor help him, terrifying excitment. Another smile crossed his face, 'Thirty years, I wouldn't change a thing.' Out of the corner of his eye he caught the vox-caster trooper cocking his eyebrow at him.
'Is there a problem trooper,' asked the sergeant tapping his chainsword against his shoulder.
'No sir, just a message from command.'
"Well, out with it!"
The trooper almost jumped out of his boots. 'Sorry sir, command just sent a message updating the progress in the so-called Land of Water.'
'And that would be,' asked Noel tapping the chainsword faster impatiently.
The trooper's eye followed the weapon's movement nervously. 'A moment sir,' he pushed his ear piece tighter listening to the vox officer on the other end. 'Roger, over and out.' He pulled the headset down. 'The Land of Water has fallen under control of the Emperor.'
'Glory to the Emperor,' replied Noel placing a fist over his heart.
'Glory to the Emperor' repeated the guardsmen gathered around the two.
From what the people of this area had told command the Land of Water had the most ruthless and powerful military of any of the nations. Noel was shocked to hear that some of their shadow warriors were able to control water itself. The mist that shrouded the island gave their enemies the advantage for sneak attacks and ambushes. Still, the fighting men and women of Andraian 21st Regiment had fought on the worse death worlds the galaxy would ever see. Mist and foot pads with water guns would be no match for the might of Andra.
"How did the Land of Water fall trooper?''
'The report said despite sneak attacks, ambushes, and fierces warriors the guardsmen and Leman Russ tank groups were able to force them back to their captial villages. A single bombardment from the Basilisk artillery was enough for the people to demand their leaders to surrender.'
'Infantry win firefights. Tanks win battles. Artillery wins wars.' Noel surprised himself being able to remember the old artilleryman's saying.
'Sir, another message' the trooper went silent as more of the message came through. 'Its for you personally.'
Noel cocked an eyebrow, 'Well, what is it?'
"Bang you're dead. . ."
Noel rolled his eyes and palced a hand to his vox. 'Show yourself Val or I'll call in a bloody artillery strike and level every hill, tree, and throne cursed blade of grass!' Noel respected Trooper Val's skill as a scout and sniper, but he couldn't stand the maverick mindset of snipers.
A couple of yards away a familiar hand rose out of the tall grass. 'No need for a repeat of Crowley Prime sergeant.'
"Those were only stun grenades, Val. This time I'll call in a few favors and get something bigger."
''Alright sergeant, but I have one of the shinobi with me. I take it you have your orders?''
Noel was quickly becoming annoyed, 'I don't need a reminder. Now, hurry up!'
Val and Suki emerged from the tall grass and steped out onto the road. More than one guardsmen leveled their weapons on her anticipating trickery. The sergeant pushed past his men and stood before Suki.
"Trooper, why is this prisoner armed?"
Val gave a shrug, 'I wouldn't call her a prisoner, sir. She's more of a volunteer and she saved me from one of them shinobi folks.'
'It's not often that a sniper will admit that someone helped him,' said Noel with a smirk. 'We'll get her back to HQ as quickly as we can.' He eyed the hills in the distance. 'Though reports are warned us of large groups of enemy units have been spoted in the area.'
'And how big is large,' asked Val knowing he wasn't going to like the answer.
'The larger groups are numbering in the hundreds,' lighting a cigar Neol gave them a smile. 'If it was orks I might be worried, but this could be fun.' He took a long drag on his cigar and let out a puff of smoke. Suki coughed uncontrolably at the god awful smell.
Val started to gag, 'Sir, you're not buy those from laViers are you?' Noel nodded. 'Sir, I don't know what he puts in those things, but it isn't tabacco.'
"Nonsense! He bought these from Agra 12C. One of the finest Agricultural Worlds in the Imperium."
"Sure he did, sir."
Suki stared at a nearby puddle suspiciously. It hadn't rained in weeks, but there was no way a shinobi from the Land of Water would be out here. Val followed her gaze, 'What's wrong?'
She pointed toward the puddle, 'It has been a long time since we had rain.' Val remembered hearing about the freaks who could use water as a weapon or even take on the apperance of water. 'Sir did anyone spill there canteen or make water?'
'Not that I know, but I don't keep track of that sort of thing,' he said with a raised eyebrow. 'Any of you lot spill some water or make water?'
Most of the troopers shook their heads or shrugged.
"What does he mean make water?"
"I think he means did one of us take a pis. . ."
'Don't talk like that in front of a lady you idot,' said another trooper. A hand hit him upside the head.
"I'm a lady and ya'll talk like that around me,' said one of the few female troopers in he unit.
'You ain't a lady, you're a soldier,' said the trooper rubbing the back of his head. 'Sides, that shinobi gal is kinda cute.
Val rolled his eyes and scanned the puddle with the heat sensor in his bionic eye.
'Hmm, not hot enough for the water to be that warm. Same temp as a person. . . Better safe than sorry.' Val took a grenade launcher from the nearest trooper, 'Need to borrow this for a moment.' With a pull of the trigger the grenade sailed noisily through the air impacting in the center of the puddle.
'Are you mad,' cried Noel throwing up his hand to block the rainning chunks of earth.
"Better safe than sorry, sir."
'There,' said Suki pointed at a human head hitting the ground with a shocked experssion on its face. Val was about to make a smart remark, but was silenced by a roar of voices. Hundreds of warriors were charging over the hill armed with spears, swords, and crossbows.
'Defensive positsions,' yelled Noel as he drew his boltgun and chainsword. With a flick of his thumb the weapon roared to life. The teeth spin almost faster than the eye could see almost eager for blood. 'Get on the vox and see if HQ can find us some help!'
'Yes, sir,' answered the trooper. He franticly requested aide from HQ, 'Sir, Sentinel team Delta is on its way. E.T.A. 15 min.'
"Tell them to hurry or we'll have this lot beat before they get here."
The harden veterns of the company fill in two lines; one kneeling and the other standing. Behind them two teams of two set up mortors. At one end of the line two large men readied an autocannon and at the other a lascannon was placed on its tripod. As the attacking horde started to reach the bottom of the hill Noel lifted his chainsword.
"In the name of the God-Emperor, FIRE!"
-that's it for now!-
