Resumption of tourism - Latest info?

Hello everyone,

The only info I can find about this topic is on the sites page "Travel Alerts and Disaster Updates".
I was just wondering if there is any view on if/when the government might communicate a plan (if there is any at this time) on the resumption of international tourism?

I'm guessing the answer is no (else I guess the info would be on this page). But just trying to see if there might be any info I am missing.

For us personally, we are looking to plan holidays for May 2022 and we are listing the options for travelling outside of Europe for this period. We are naturally aware nobody can give an exact answer but are just trying to gather all existing information to make an informed decision on where we want to book.

Most likely booking a trip to the USA/Canada (which have/will open to Europeans) or South America (where some countries have re-opened) is the most logical decision, but as our 2020 trip to Japan was unable to go through, we still hope a 2022 trip would be possible.

There have been no updates since June. We usually post travel-related news as soon as they are released, either under "Travel News", or in this thread.

The JNTO has a page on Coronavirus (COVID-19) travel restrictions, too.


On 10 June 2022, Japan opened up to tourists on guided package tours. We can only speculate when they will open to individual, self-guided tourists.

If you want a prediction rather than solid facts, I reckon that restrictions on tourists will be loosened once the current wave of infections is over.

I'm making this prediction because the Japanese national broadcaster NHK, which basically frames its news exactly how the government wants it to, has gone from placing reports on loosening restrictions for foreigners immediately before reports on increasing numbers of new cases (it's our fault, you see) to reporting about how Japanese tourism companies are suffering because of the lack of foreign tourists, thus softening up the, on the whole xenophobic, population to the idea of foreign tourists being allowed back in the country in large numbers.
