Regd Child Birth Expence [Shussan Ichijikin]

Hello Everyone,

I am an Indian. I work in Sumitomo Industries. I have Employer's Provided Health Insurance.
My wife has delivered a baby recently she would be visiting Japan along with the baby in April.

Whether I would be eligible for [Shussan Ichijikin] thats the delivery expense [4.2K] ??

The NHI holders get the same from the ward office what would be the process for me ??

Thats a good question. Is your wife currently covered under your employer's insurance? Also where did the birth take place? A lot of insurance gets very picky about covering events that take place outside of the country the insurance is located in. Sometimes they will cover but you have to pay the full amount up front and get an itemized and translated bill to submit to them for reimbursement.
I am not really familiar with Japanese insurance so don't let anything I said worry you as it won't necessarily apply. I would ask the HR department at your company about it. Though maybe someone else on the forums has a better answer.

Yeah, talk to your HR department.

Biggest factors will probably be:
1) Is she your health care dependent? (Did your company issue her a card?)
2) Do you have adequate records of the birth-related costs?

Japanese national health coverage will cover expenses outside the country the same as within Japan. You need to supply translated documentation of the receipts and explanations, though. Point that out to your HR people or to the ward office/city hall that handles your insurance, if they hesitate.

How much this applies to childbirth expense itself, I don't know, as childbirth is not covered by insurance. Reimbursement, as you seem to know, is a separate thing.

In a country with a dwindling birthrate and a large aging population you would think they would want to cover childbirth expenses with insurance. I would bet the expense of childbirth is something at least a small percentage of people considering having kids have stumbled over.

In the US you just wouldn't be able to afford it if you weren't rich. I haven't gotten all the bills yet for our little one but I would guess that its going to be really close to $10,000 USD*. Thank goodness for my good insurance. I think we will only have to pay about $1000 to $1500 total.

*And it was a normal birth without complications

My youngest is 10 and at the time the limit was 30万, over that we had to pay.
